What exactly is a fairy?

Fairies are generally described as human in appearance and having magical powers. Their origins are less clear in the folklore, being variously dead, or some form of demon, or a species completely independent of humans or angels. Folklorists have suggested that their actual origin lies in a conquered race living in hiding, or in religious beliefs that lost currency with the advent of Christianity. These explanations are not necessarily incompatible, and they may be traceable to multiple sources.

Much of the folklore about fairies revolves around protection from their malice, by such means as cold iron (iron is like poison to fairies, and they will not go near it) or charms of rowan and herbs, or avoiding offense by shunning locations known to be theirs. Many folktales are told of fairies, and they appear as characters in stories from medieval tales of chivalry, to Victorian fairy tales, and up to the present day in modern literature.

In his manuscript, The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies, Reverend Robert Kirk, minister of the Parish of Aberfoyle, Stirling, Scotland, wrote in 1691:

"These Siths or Fairies they call Sleagh Maith or the Good People...are said to be of middle nature between Man and Angel, as were Daemons thought to be of old; of intelligent fluidous Spirits, and light changeable bodies (lyke those called Astral) somewhat of the nature of a condensed cloud, and best seen in twilight. These bodies be so pliable through the sublety of Spirits that agitate them, that they can make them appear or disappear at pleasure"

They are often depicted as young, sometimes winged, humanoids of small stature, ranging in size from very tiny up to the size of a human child. Even with these small fairies, however, their small size may be magically assumed rather than constant. Wings, while common in Victorian and later artwork of fairies, are very rare in the folklore; even very small fairies flew with magic, sometimes flying on ragwort stems or the backs of birds. Nowadays, fairies are often depicted with ordinary insect wings or butterfly wings.

Various animals have also been described as fairies. Sometimes this is the result of shape shifting on part of the fairy, as in the case of the selkie (seal people); others, like the kelpie and various black dogs, appear to stay more constant in form.

In some folklore, Fey have green eyes and often bite. Though they can confuse one with their words, fairies cannot lie. They hate being told 'thank you', as they see it as a sign as one forgetting the good deed done, and want something that'll guarantee remembrance.

The following text is an excerpt from an infamous grimorie, by Francesca De Grandis, on how one may summon a feyfolk for magical purposes

Don't take this lightly. The Fey Folk are wild, and their integrity so strong and unusual that you must be careful with them. However, if you approach one correctly, he\she can be an honorable, powerful and delightful friend and ally.

If you find you cannot handle the power of this rite, courteously end the visit. If an evil entity arrives by accident, end the visit, either with courtesy or rudeness, whichever is safest and most effective.

Do each numbered step before going onto the next.

1. Focus on the darkness of the mind's eye, the darkness that's automatically there when your eyes are closed.

2. See that darkness filled with a glowing green, a Faerie green, a magic glow.

3. Feel that magic, green, Fey glow start swirling around you, bathing you in its beauty, bathing you in its magic.

4. Into that mist, call out for a Faerie friend. Don't demand a visit, for we do not control the Fey Folk. Invite with warmth, courtesy, good will and good cheer.

5. Greet and welcome your visitor with dignity and courtesy. Ask his\her name and his\her need of you. If no name is given you, usually you should end the visit. When you meet someone on the physical plane who will not tell you their name, there is usually something awry, right?

6. Never lightly make an agreement with a Faerie. They take commitments seriously. And are tricksters, who often have an unusual view as to what life should be like. You may not want the same goals as they.

7. Perhaps this spirit will become your friend for a while or even a lifetime. You can use this ritual to visit with him\her again. But for now say "Farewell."

8. After doing something like this ritual, one might be in an altered state without realizing it. If you then do something like drive, walk at night along a city street, or cook, you could possibly go through a red light, get mugged, or burn yourself, all because you were off in another world! So, after you finish step 7, do the following two steps:

A. Spend some time consciously focusing on the embodied, mundane plane by making your mind concentrate on physical things.

B. Then continue this focusing by looking both ways carefully when crossing streets or paying special, conscientious attention to kitchen safety or whatever focus is appropriate to the activity in which you become involved. Use these two steps until you are well focused onto the embodied plane.

You may feel very sharp and alert, so think there is no need for step 8. Please do it anyway. For one thing, alert as you are, you might be alert only to the SPIRIT plane! Take the time to become alert to the physical realm. If you're feeling really spacy or "out there" add body stretches or do some other very physical but safe activity that will focus you onto your own body.

Fairy classification

This is but a small list of the near 500 different species of fairies

Fata Vulgaris
Common fairy

Average height: 0'7"
Average bust: equivelent to 34 b
Average hair color: Varies
Average eye color: Green

Profiles related to this fairy species
Chiri

Notable things

* Common fairies tend to be the most childish of all fairies, always up to mischief in some form or another. NEVER make an agreement with a common fairy, they will tend to make sure it backfires in some way.

* Fairy dust: Common fairies in particular have a dust, that when thrown, will cause someone to float into the air for some time...tends to only work on humanoids.

* Charm: All fairies can charm to some degree, charming someone causes a sense of fascination and calm within a person...it also causes them to be easily suggestible and no doubt will listen to whatever the fairy says. Common fairies have the weakest of charms.

Fata Lagena
Bottle Fairy

Average height: 0'5"
Average bust: typically flatchested
Average hair color: green or yellow
Average eye color: brown

Notable things

*Bottle fairies are notoriously meek and also will not harm humanoids in any fashion...this, combined with their smaller stature, is why they are called 'bottle fairies' as many humans capture them and keep them in bottles.

*... for that matter, they really don't mind, as long as you feed them.

* Curiously, Bottle fairies have the ability to heal someone from critical wounds, even death in some cases, just by touch...though...which is why, often times, apothecaries carry fairies in bottles for people who are sick. Bottle fairies demand the highest prices, of course.

* Charm: Bottle fairies actually have the strongest charm, but it is a special charm, in that, it causes the one afflicted to completely ignore the fairies existence.

Fata Lumen
Lamplight Fairy

Average height: 0'5"
Average bust: typically flatchested
Average hair color: yellow
Average eye color: gold

Notable things

*Have a lot in common with bottle fairies, though tend to be on the feisty side, and will escape if given a chance...also are exhibitionists and will moon people when given the chance. Crude...very very crude.

* Lamplight fairies glow...go figure...and they cant stop glowing no matter how hard they try, even their fairy dust glows....wonder why they are called lamplight fairies now?

* What other thing makes them special? Their fairy dust is a powerful love stimulant...blow some on the one you seek, and love will be all thats on their mind...well...infatuation, anyway.

* Charm: Unlike their bottle-dwelling cousins, Lamplight fairies can barely charm, preferring to just use their dust instead.

Fata Viridis
Nature or 'leaf' Fairy

Average height: 0'7"
Average bust: equivalent to 34b-36C
Average hair color: Green
Average eye color: Red

Notable things

*Often confused with mandragora or dryads.

*Have no wings, due to the need to be in contact with plant-life. also do not need to be fed because all of their nutrient come from plants. Consequently, their presence with a plant or flower ensures that it will have a longevity nearly 200 times its normal lifespan.

*Loved by alchemists, apothecaries, cooks and gardeners alike, and are always treated well.

*They are the meekest of fairies. They take the longest to garner friendship with, and still stay shy even after they are firm friends with someone.

* Charm: Green fairies have a powerful charm, but only use it to turn people away from bothering their plant.

Fata Filare
Gossamer Fairy
Average height: 0'5"
Average bust: Varies heavily
Average hair color:See Dust
Average Eye color:Varies

Profiles related to this fairy species
Flavia

Notable things

*The most 'colorful' of fairies. Tend to be disguised as other fairies, though can be easily identified by their unique wings.

*Have a hard time maintaining flight. Often take to gliding as opposed to actual true flight because of their large overbearing wings.

*Called Gossamer fairies both because of their wings, and their tendency to steal and eat fabric, especially thread.

*Dust: A unique dust that can rapidly change the color of anything except metals and woods. Plant matter, flowers, skin, hair, fabric can all be changed on a whim, but only by the fairy themselves. Hence why no two Gossamer fairy are alike, color wise.

*Charm: A fairly potent charm, it actually is a paralyzing gaze that she uses both to get meals off from humans, and to steal spider silk from arachnids.

Luck, or Good Luck fairy

Average height: 0'4"
Average bust: equivelent to 36C
Average hair color: Blonde
Average eye color: Green

Profiles related to this fairy species
Lylia

Notable things

*Insanely rare and hard to find, hunted to near extinction.

*Here's why: Luck fairies, like their name suggests, cause insanely good luck in one of two ways. Either by treating the fairy well and giving it whatever it wants, which will cause the person treating it well to have decently good luck for their entire life...or through its dust, which gives about an hour's worth of insanely good luck, though people become resistant to it with each dose.

* Very loving and trusting, luck fairies love humanoids and other fairies and tend to be overly clingy toward them

* Since their luck doesn't work on other fairies, most other fairy species hate them because of their clinging nature.

*Charm: Luck fairies have a strong charm that, ironically, also causes bad luck in whomever is effected by it. Generally they use it on people trying to hurt them.

Fata Socolata Malus
Chocolate Fairy (Devil/Doxy)

Average Height: 0'8"
Average Bust: Equivalent to 36 C
Average hair color: Chocolate!
Average eye colors: Gold, brown, Orange

Notable things

*Actually considered a form of doxy, due to a 'poisonous' bite and a tenancy to be more of a pest then a helpful being.

*Smells faintly of chocolate, because they often ingest chocolate, as well as their dust and bodies smell heavily of it.

*Chocolate dust: Tastes and smells like chocolate, but is actually a powerful paralytic, allowing the chocolate doxy to continue plundering food. Actually dissolves shortly after leaving the body, so cannot be used to 'coat' food. More of a personal defense.

*Charm: A simple charm that can be used either as a form of echolocation to point her in the direction of the closest source of chocolate...or to cause an individual to immediately forget whatever they were doing and promptly remember some, often fake, important thing they had to get done.

Fata malus
Doxy, or Dark/Death Fairy

Average height: 0'6"
Average bust: equivalent to 36D
Average hair color: Blonde
Average eye color: Blue

Notable things

WARNING: DOXIES HAVE A DEADLY POISONOUS BITE AND WILL BITE HUMANS ON ANY CHANCE THEY GET, AS THEY FEED ON HUMAN FLESH. DO NOT APPROACH!

* They are extremely hated for that fact by both fairy and human kind, but because of their willingness to mate and healthy brood sizes, they cannot be completely eliminated.

* Doxy are very malicious beings generally...there have been known cases of sweet Doxies before, but often times they are killed or abandoned by their kind.

*Doxy always move in swarms of four to five.

*A surefire method of killing a doxy is to get them wet, they cannot fly if wet, and this severly limits their movement, allowing for one to crush them.

*Charm: Doxies have easily one of the strongest charms that cause a human to literally fall into a state of lust for them.

OOC notes

Obviously this is intended on being a swarming or character for RP ideas...any fairy is available for choice in an rp, though the player does prefer one on one interaction.

Player LOVES the idea of there being someone who studies fairies, perhaps even having a collection of them for scientific purposes.

Player will play a sweet doxy in an rp, but generally one has to fight through a group of mean doxies to be able to interact with the sweet one.
