What exactly is a fairy?
Fairies are generally described as human in appearance and having magical powers. Their origins are less clear in the folklore, being variously dead, or some form of demon, or a species completely independent of humans or angels. Folklorists have suggested that their actual origin lies in a conquered race living in hiding, or in religious beliefs that lost currency with the advent of Christianity. These explanations are not necessarily incompatible, and they may be traceable to multiple sources.

Much of the folklore about fairies revolves around protection from their malice, by such means as cold iron (iron is like poison to fairies, and they will not go near it) or charms of rowan and herbs, or avoiding offense by shunning locations known to be theirs. Many folktales are told of fairies, and they appear as characters in stories from medieval tales of chivalry, to Victorian fairy tales, and up to the present day in modern literature.

In his manuscript, The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns and Fairies, Reverend Robert Kirk, minister of the Parish of Aberfoyle, Stirling, Scotland, wrote in 1691:
"These Siths or Fairies they call Sleagh Maith or the Good People...are said to be of middle nature between Man and Angel, as were Daemons thought to be of old; of intelligent fluidous Spirits, and light changeable bodies (lyke those called Astral) somewhat of the nature of a condensed cloud, and best seen in twilight. These bodies be so pliable through the sublety of Spirits that agitate them, that they can make them appear or disappear at pleasure"
They are often depicted as young, sometimes winged, humanoids of small stature, ranging in size from very tiny up to the size of a human child. Even with these small fairies, however, their small size may be magically assumed rather than constant. Wings, while common in Victorian and later artwork of fairies, are very rare in the folklore; even very small fairies flew with magic, sometimes flying on ragwort stems or the backs of birds. Nowadays, fairies are often depicted with ordinary insect wings or butterfly wings.

The feyfolk, being highly magical beings, tend to change themselves to follow the perception of non-magic folk, so that they will not get overly confused by our apperance....so, since its common perception that Fairies have wings....we all have wings now
Various animals have also been described as fairies. Sometimes this is the result of shape shifting on part of the fairy, as in the case of the selkie (seal people); others, like the kelpie and various black dogs, appear to stay more constant in form.

....ehhh, most of the other beings like us have their own names for themselves...sprites, doxies, fairies, imps. etc etc...we all refer to ourselves under the blanket term 'feyfolk' but we like to think we are all different in our own ways
In some folklore, Fey have green eyes and often bite. Though they can confuse one with their words, fairies cannot lie. They hate being told 'thank you', as they see it as a sign as one forgetting the good deed done, and want something that'll guarantee remembrance.

The following text is an excerpt from an infamous grimorie, by Francesca De Grandis, on how one may summon a feyfolk for magical purposes
Don't take this lightly. The Fey Folk are wild, and their integrity so strong and unusual that you must be careful with them. However, if you approach one correctly, he\she can be an honorable, powerful and delightful friend and ally.
If you find you cannot handle the power of this rite, courteously end the visit. If an evil entity arrives by accident, end the visit, either with courtesy or rudeness, whichever is safest and most effective.
Do each numbered step before going onto the next.
1. Focus on the darkness of the mind's eye, the darkness that's automatically there when your eyes are closed.
2. See that darkness filled with a glowing green, a Faerie green, a magic glow.
3. Feel that magic, green, Fey glow start swirling around you, bathing you in its beauty, bathing you in its magic.

The first three steps are perfect for summoning 'Fata Vulgaris' or the common fairy...adjust the color to get other species
4. Into that mist, call out for a Faerie friend. Don't demand a visit, for we do not control the Fey Folk. Invite with warmth, courtesy, good will and good cheer.
5. Greet and welcome your visitor with dignity and courtesy. Ask his\her name and his\her need of you. If no name is given you, usually you should end the visit. When you meet someone on the physical plane who will not tell you their name, there is usually something awry, right?
Cina Note:
This is an insanely important step...if you do not get a name, that generally means you could be contacting a Doxy, who dont have names, or an Imp, who will never give out their name for fear of being controlled by it. No name means not a fairy.
6. Never lightly make an agreement with a Faerie. They take commitments seriously. And are tricksters, who often have an unusual view as to what life should be like. You may not want the same goals as they.

Your mileage may vary...get to know the fairy well and you can usually tell what their goals are after a while...we do take commitments extremely seriously, though
7. Perhaps this spirit will become your friend for a while or even a lifetime. You can use this ritual to visit with him\her again. But for now say "Farewell."
8. After doing something like this ritual, one might be in an altered state without realizing it. If you then do something like drive, walk at night along a city street, or cook, you could possibly go through a red light, get mugged, or burn yourself, all because you were off in another world! So, after you finish step 7, do the following two steps:
A. Spend some time consciously focusing on the embodied, mundane plane by making your mind concentrate on physical things.
B. Then continue this focusing by looking both ways carefully when crossing streets or paying special, conscientious attention to kitchen safety or whatever focus is appropriate to the activity in which you become involved. Use these two steps until you are well focused onto the embodied plane.
You may feel very sharp and alert, so think there is no need for step 8. Please do it anyway. For one thing, alert as you are, you might be alert only to the SPIRIT plane! Take the time to become alert to the physical realm. If you're feeling really spacy or "out there" add body stretches or do some other very physical but safe activity that will focus you onto your own body.

About Cina
My actual name is Cynalhlae, which loosely translates in common as 'Seer of far onyx' which I know is a very odd name, but the elves are responsible for naming baby fairies that are born close to their homes, and that's the one they gave me, as i do have a knack for finding onix...though i have a knack for finding any gems...comes with being an Earthen Fairy....anyway, don't bother trying to pronounce it, i prefer being called Cina anyway.
What can I do? Well, i can do pretty much what any other fairy can, but here...i'll write it all down here for you in a nice little list
Flight: I got these pretty wings, see, and i can fly with em...
Charm: All Feyfolk can charm beings, how well we can charm them depends on the strength of the mind of whom we are charming, and the magical power of the fey...Personally, i suck hard at charming...i can sort of get people to not notice me, and i sometimes can use a fascination charm...but i'm really no good at it.
Earth-pact: Now we're getting into the Earthen fairy stuff...the earth-pact...or anything-pact for that matter is something special to elemental fairies and each elemental fairy can do different things with their pacts...lightning fairies can call down lightning, water fairies can make it rain, nature fairies can make a Lotus bloom to sleep in...earthen fairies actually have two things...if we put our ears to the ground, we can literally hear anything malicious or hateful coming for us....and should they be near, our bodies change to the shade of the earth perfectly, so we cannot be detected by them. Oh, and specially with us elemental fairies, we cant learn magic till we do the pact.
Getting this ability involves a ceremony with the Fairy queen and your not allowed to do it till you come of age around 7 years old....hey, that's a long time for a fairy!
Earth manipulation: Its the most basic earth fairy magic...we can make the ground move and shift by moving our hands...the more magic, the more you can move...i'm not too bad at this, i can make a nice sized hole to trap a silly human if i want.
Mineral detection: This is where i got my name...though all earth fairies can do it, i have a knack for finding anything gem-like...all i need to do is touch the ground and i can tell you how far it is away, what it is...and how deep it is...honestly its what most people call on me for. I can sort of do metals also, but your better off getting a metal fairy for that.
Geomatic blessing/curse:...heh....i gotta make note, if you idiots use me for my mineral detection...dont screw me over and try to take all the gems for yourself...i can manipulate gemstones for magical purposes....and every stone i use magic off becomes worthless, black and brittle.... different gems do different things, of course, and generally if it does a good benefit, i can do the opposite of that benefit also, if it does something aside from that for a curse or blessing, i'll note it.
Amazonite:generally a good cure-all for ailments that effect karma, the balance of light and darkness in someone, doesn't bias based on alignment...but only works on women.
Amethyst: It takes a powerful mage to work, but you can pretty much do anything with this stone if you try...i'm not good enough yet.
Aventurine: This is another Cure-all stone, mostly good for wounds or sickness but its only good for mild to moderate issues...anything critical and it just doesn't work.
Blue Topaz: Hoo boy, this is totally a curse gem, the spell causes the target to be intensly infatuated with whatever i choose... though, blue topaz are very very rare.
Carnelian: This is an interesting one, it improves creativity..i really don't use em, but i do have an artist friend who likes it if i use them on him...he draws pretty picture s of me in return...and gives me food, for that matter.
Chrysocolla: Its a cure blessing only good for one thing. Depression...it destroys all forms of depression.
Citrine: You know, some people call citrine magic a blessing, but i call it a curse...it causes the target to be an over-the top optimist...the good feeling it causes, though, usually leads to a hard crash of depression and stress.
Coral: Coral, like one would think, is used to control tides, favor sea travel, give benefit to water-based creatures...and if i really focus, i can make fresh water with coral. Though, this can also curse someone with unfavorable sea travel, etc etc.
Diamond: This is a stone of purity...and i actually havent ever found one, so i dont know what i can do with them...all i know is that its a pure stone.
Emerald: A stone of nature, emeralds promote natural beings and also poisons, either removing the toxin...or making it more potent.
Fluorite: Humans never seem to like this gem, but its probably te most powerful one i have, because one tiny piece of fluorite can still be used about 2000 times, it is a stone of clairvoyance, letting me find things other then gems.
Garnet:Not a fire gem like people think, its actually a highly powerful lust-curse gem...anyone hit with it...well lets just say the last time i used one, i got shoved in some paladina's private parts and was covered in human juices....
Hematite: Hematite focuses intelligence and logical thinking...basically, people get real good at math and strategy.
Jade: Well, this is one of those ones that have a very different blessing and curse. The blessing promotes and divines true love...the curse, however...inflicts a huge wave of jealousy in a couple, EXCEPT in the cases of true love.
Jasper: Jasper comes in different colors, but they all basically can do the same thing, the color basically determines what it does...the effect is a one shot spell...
Red: a fiery bolt
Green: boosts plants
Yellow(Fancy): whips up a sandstorm
Lapis Lazuli: This is a protection stone true and true, i can use it to make a repulsion shield for a few minutes...nothing can penetrate it unless i personally let it in.
Malachite: Its a shapechanger stone, i can change someone's appearance for a few hours with one of these.
Moonstone: I will never, ever use this stone because of how rare it is and what it does. It grants wishes....yes...wishes, any wish.
Peridot: Peridot promotes electricity, and does have some curious effects. Of course, i can use it to make electricity, but if i cast it with a blessing on a humanoid, it makes their reaction time about four times as good as it was...or i can make it a quarter as good...funny, huh?
Ruby: Here's your fire gem...mostly i can use it to manipulate flames, but it also can cause heavy rage in humanoids...like....i'mma rip you to pieces rage.
Sapphire: This is an ice gem...yep, manipulating ice...but it also can either be used to cause immense calm in humanoids...or it makes em klutzy beyond belief.
Turquoise: This is not a stone to be used, its power poisons the soul, causing anything the target tries to do to end in failure...it is literally a bad luck stone.
Zoisite: The rarest gem in my world, it is also an insanely powerful curse gem that promotes darkness in ones heart...but...i can also use it to increase the rarity of the gem...by sucking the darkness out with this gem...
