Bio

Tenma(天魔) is an enigmatic character, only known to be the chief of the tengu on the Youkai Mountain. She was first mentioned as the Tengu boss in the Tengu section of Perfect Memento in Strict Sense.

The first character of Tenma, Ten (天) means "heaven" and the second, ma (魔) means "demon".

When the Hindi god Māra was adapted to Japanese Buddhism, it was translated as "天魔" (temma), the abbreviation form of "第六天魔王 (dai-roku temma-ou) — Māra (魔羅), the king (王) of the sixth dimension of god's living (第六天), which is the top dimension of the desire world. She was originally a Buddhist god, but Japanese people have had her identified with tengu, so she was commonly seen to be the boss of tengu.

There are some others who are called Tenma, but among Touhou fans, it is almost a general idea that the Tenma is inspired by Grand Emperor Sutoku because she became a tengu after her death to be feared by people and she is counted as one of so-called "the three evilest youkai": the other two are Tamamo no Mae and Shuten Douji, who are the inspirations of Ran and Suika.

She is sometimes confused with the term "great tengu" who are a management type of tengu (see Perfect Memento in Strict Sense: Tengu).

In Mountain of Faith, the great tengu (management types, not to be confused with the boss tengu, Tenma) receives a report from Momiji about intruders on the mountain and sends her and Aya to investigate. After discovering that they weren't hostile, Tenma and the Mountain God (presumably Kanako) decided to pursue friendly relations, though the full details of the discussion were kept secret.

Personality

A calm and fair leader, she tends to keep to herself, allowing her fellow tengu to care for their land as they see fit. She has always been seen as even-tempered by her kin and because of this she has held the title of Tenma for so long, noone even remembers her original name.

She has been and always will be protective of the mountains that the Tengu and Kappa live near, she fiercely defending her land via border enforcement and flat-out aggressive and antagonistic tactics made toward anyone attempting to cross into tengu land without reason. Simply put, the mountains belong to the tengu and the tengu alone.

Abilities

Whispers on the wind: Essentially, she does not need to spy on other lands, she is able to hear clearly at great distances. She is also a powerful clairvoyant, able to use a crystal ball to watch other lands as need be, even if she needs to put her glasses on to do so.

Tenma: as Tenma, Lord of all Tengu, she is akin to royalty. All known tengu will come to her defense and aid if she is attacked for this very reason.

Fenghuang Fan: A sacred treasure of the tengu, made from feathers of the immortal Fenghuang, or Chinese Pheonix. The most powerful tengu fan in existence, it is said to be able to create hurricanes with a flick of the wrist.

Émigré Manuscript: Not a sacred treasure of the Tengu, but a book she was given to protect with her very life. May or may not be a Tsukumogami when you meet her. The Émigré Manuscript is one of the most famous Alchemical tombs on bringing life back from death.

Spell Cards

Though this is a small selection, there are quite a few more. Tenma simply does not battle that often, preferring to have her subordinates push any threat away. Most all spell cards have a movement element to them, the wind forcing her opponent to move or fight the wind and stay in place.

Mountain sign [Defense at the gate]: Stylized by the White wolf tengu, she draws a traditional curved blade and shield from one of her Tengu subordinates and cuts slashes into the air, before dashing forward shield in tow, attempting to cut her foes down with a powerful, wide arcing slash.

Wind Sign [Feathers caught in the breeze]: Stylized by the Karasu Tengu, she draws out her Fenghuang fan and swings it hard, sending a torrent of galeforce wind to send her opponent to continue being pushed away from her, while black-feather bullets get caught in the wind and cascade in its direction.

Mountain Sign [Gust from the cave's mouth]: A more symbolic sign, shots are fired downward that collect below the opponent, only to powerfully shoot upward in a cone, creating a howling sound as they fire upward. Opponents are forced to stay far to the top, limiting chances to attack Tenma directly.

Control Sign [Tenma's Edict]: Stylized by the Dai Tengu, A powerful swing of the Fenghuang fan causes a huge, swirling mass of wind to begin causing her foe to be shoved either to the left or the right as she swings. While she is swinging, she fires a laser at her opponent, forcing them to dodge upward or downward. Becomes hard to manage as she begins to rapidly change the direction of the wind.

Storm Sign [Fujita Scale]: A five tiered skill, stylizied by the boss tengu herself. It shows her absolute power over wind itself by creating a tornado of danmaku in the middle of the field, the wind swirling with it and forcing the opponent to dodge within it. Each wave is stronger than the last, till the last one is enveloped the battlefield in an F-5 class tornado.

Mountain Sign [Anabatic Gale]: A meteological term describing a 'powerful wind flowing up an incline. It is best performed at or near youkai mountain. Once again following her inclination toward restrictive movement, she swings her fan to force a powerful wind that, yes, forces people upward, though also follows Anabatic wind's properties, causing them to be drug toward the middle of the battle field. As she does this, she sends counter cuts of wind energy that get pulled to the middle from either side, creating a trapped area in the middle of the battlefield.

Flatland Sign [[Dust Devil]]: A different take on a cyclonic technique, she actually whips the dust up into the cyclone, causing a massive reduction in visibility. Split-second dodging is required as the dust becomes so thick, it is near impossible to see the cyclonic shots coming toward the opponent, let alone be able to hit Tenma while doing so. The only break is when the wind shifts directions

Altitude Sign [Jet Stream]: Beginning High above the battlefield, Tenma sends the wind forward, but its a feint, as the true terror is the powerful lightning strikes and rain danmaku that swiftly come flying down during this technique. Because this technique is a simple, effortless change of the jet stream, this technique has become her 'survival' technique, as she is able to use her fan to blow any shots back to sender with ease, making it impossible to attack her during the technique.

[Kamikaze]: Named after the very divine wind that protected the japanese people from invasion, Tenma sends a -violent- wind forward that causes her opponent to be trapped into a corner of the battlefield, oppressively punishing movement as danmaku gets swept in the violent wind as well as debris. This is her most powerful card, becoming impossible to manage after enough time passes.
