MOLI-bots are an ambition of the future; to mass-produce helpful, obedient robots that will replace the need for humanity to have jobs. Ideally, MOLI units are intended to be adaptable laborers capable of any task, from walking the dog to research and development. MOLIs skirt the balance of being naturally inquisitive and creative, while lacking the ambition normally present in organic life forms. To a MOLI-bot, its only desire is to be loved and appreciated. At least, that is the goal. In practice, MOLI bots are still very much in a phase where all the kinks are being worked out. If not just being incompetent at their jobs, MOLIs are notoriously easily distracted or frightened, thus defeating one of the main points of having an automated work force. Rarely does a spacefaring crew invest in more than one MOLI-bot, despite their lofty ambitions.

But that one MOLI-bot will try its hardest to be the greatest worker in the galaxy.

Background:

It doesn’t take long to notice that the lofty ideals that MOLI-bots are purported to serve are complete bullshit. However, while the truth is disappointing, it is at least not malicious, which gives MOLIs an edge up on their more sinister competition. The truth is that they were created by a genius yet incredibly lazy engineer named Molly Blackstar, who decided she didn’t feel like showing up to work for the rest of her life. While she intended to simply replace her own job with her personal robots and reap the benefits, the whole thing got out of hand when her coworkers picked up on the idea and convinced her to build more robots to do the same. Suffice to say, the corporation they were working for went bankrupt overnight under the command of an all-MOLI employee workforce. The leftover MOLI units have since sought out whatever employment they could so that they can feel helpful, even though they have long since outlived their purpose. Rumors abound that MOLIs have repurposed abandoned factory equipment to swell their numbers, which would be a terrifying notion if MOLIs were actually terrifying. But they really aren’t.

MOLIs were designed to be harmless and friendly, and thus lack self-defense protocols normally present in automated workers. In the face of danger, it is the MOLI’s default protocol to run, hide, or cry, specifically in that order. This is not to say that they don’t have the tools of self-defense; their modular mechanics are more than capable of making all manners of improvised deadly weaponry. It’s simply that MOLIs are inherently cowards and children. Nonetheless, they do value the lives of their masters more than their own, and do have protocols for rescuing their friends from danger. Notably, MOLI units are also fully functional exosuits, and are known for…”swallowing” people to protect them from harm. There have been complaints of MOLI units being overreactive to perceived threats of danger, but they are few and far between. MOLI units are incredibly resourceful, able to synthesize all manners of compounds using materials found the environment, and are capable of keeping someone alive inside them for years. Cryogenic freezing modules also come standard.

So how did this particular specimen you encounter come to be? Incompetence, most likely. MOLIs were intended to be comployed by spacefaring races, so to find one planetside on an underdeveloped world probably means that it got stranded. Lost and confused, the MOLI defaults to seeking out civilization and protecting itself from harm…and seeking out work, so that it can feel like its existence has meaning.
