Miria

Played by Phantelle

First of her name, Queen Miria Ilraven is a feared tyrant, powerful sorceress, devourer of deities, and loving mother.

She rose from humble beginnings as the daughter of a woodcutter whose pretty face and witty tongue caught the attention of a god. Inducted against her will into his harem, Miria nevertheless took the opportunity to acquire a first-rate liberal arts education; her natural aptitude for the cutthroat politics of the harem would also serve as an experience base for later ventures into the ruling sphere. Some of Miria's oldest allies in her eventual quest for world domination began as fellow servants and bedslaves in the harem, rising with her from their humble beginnings to trouble the land. Miria spent decades in the god's harem as a fille de joie, kept from aging by his power and jealously guarded away from mere mortals. And Miria felt just a little bit upset about being reduced to someone's pleasure toy, so she joined a revolution.

Miria Ilraven was not the first mortal to raise her hand against the gods, nor possibly the last, nor did she start the movement, but it did permanently break the stranglehold that the gods exerted on the world. Miria's master was the first deity to be trapped in her stomach, condemned to eternal digestion as she siphoned his power for herself. Others soon followed him, either underestimating the cunning of the woman or falling prey to her armies during her ascent. Miria's path to queendom was hardly a smooth one, but in the end she stood ascendant over rivals both mortal and divine due to a combination of political skill, diplomatic intrigue, battlefield persistence and not a little luck. Many of her enemies from this time would end up with their souls in her stomach or as decorations for her new castle and wardrobe.

Ironically, though she now exceeds any of the old gods in power and influence, Miria has become much like that which she rebelled against in the long past. The queen rules her subjects through fear of her power to smite them like a goddess pitilessly passing judgment and treats her enemies scarcely better than the old gods ruled mortal men. Her empire is a cult of personality where dissent is rarely tolerated, she herself is worshiped, and ordinary people groan under the weight of a system that demands heavy taxation, much corvee, and sacrifice of life. Miria Ilraven has few enemies left; soon none might remain any longer to oppose her.

Family
Miria's oldest child is her daughter Rae Ilraven, who is also actively in rebellion against her. Rae is over two hundred years old, a beautiful and fiercely determined daughter, though Miria still treats her as a little girl sometimes. The queen raised her idealistic and romantic first child to be a worthy heiress of the throne, hoping to one day pass the heavy responsibility of ruling onto Rae and allowing herself to fade into obscurity once all the gods were caught and enslaved. Miria succeeded too much; the values of kindness, good rulership, benevolence, and responsibility which she sought to instill into Rae eventually led her eldest daughter to reject her mother's methods and lead much of the Ilraven army's elite into revolt against Miria. This event precipitated a bitter, fractious civil war which has greatly weakened the Ilraven Empire and strained relationships between the two women. Though Miria still hopes to be reconciled with her estranged oldest daughter, Rae shows little sign of abating in her course.

After Rae's rebellion, Miria conceived again and bore a son named Beauregard. Beau is the most intelligent of Miria's three children and Miria considered leaving the empire to him as well, but he showed little interest in running the empire's daily affairs or tangling with Miria's vast, bloated bureaucracy. Instead, Beau's talents have gone almost exclusively to waging war as both tactician and warrior. Miria allowed him to rise up in station within her army until he became her most trusted commander and leader of the entire empire's armed forces. Beau has often clashed with Rae both on the battlefield and off, which is a constant source of frustration to the family-minded Miria. The queen would prefer that her son study and use his talents as an administrator, but his heart belongs on the battlefield.

Miria's youngest child is Jacqueline Ilraven at eighteen, a child born with such immense magical potential that her sheer power dwarfs even Miria's by an order of magnitude or more. "Jackie", as she is often known to her siblings and intimates, is the queen's current heiress-apparent and the one member of the family whom all the rest have agreed is suitable as a compromise candidate to inherit the throne. Like her brother and sister, Jacqueline was raised with a strong sense of righteousness and justice to prepare her to be a better queen than Miria, but in her case any source of friction between her worldview and Miria's is tempered by a strong bond of love between mother and daughter. Miria hopes she can succeed with Jacqueline where Rae and Beau fell short of her demands; with time, perhaps her third child will lead the world to a new golden age free of her tyranny.

Her three children are all half-siblings, since each one has the same mother but different fathers. What became of their sires is not known; Miria's only comment on the matter has been to stroke one of her breasts with a finger.

Empire
Miria rules roughly a third of the habitable planet. Another third is contested between Miria's armies and those of her enemies, such as the few remaining gods who have thus far escaped her terrible stomach, mortal opponents, and rebels. The remaining third belongs to her great rival, a bright queen who is every bit as gentle and kind as Miria is cruel and feared. A world once ruled by countless squabbling petty deities now teeters on the brink of consolidation under one despot; Miria is determined to be that queen, whereupon she might finally pass the crown to Jacqueline when her great conquest is completed.

The Ilraven Empire is built on slave labor and the ruthless, cynical exploitation of the remnants of the gods' powers by Miria's bureaucracy. Although home to vast swathes of population, much of the empire wallows in drudgery where subsistence is minimal and the demands of their ruler weigh heavily on their backs. Few families are exempt from the conscription that swells Miria's armies or a labor force perpetually in need of more workers; Miria is often engaged in grand projects of warfare or architecture and the people suffer to see her aspirations realized. The empire relentlessly propagandizes about the fearsome days when the gods ruled the world and paints Queen Miria as the only hope of forestalling a return to those terrible times. Where the people cannot be kept in line through inducements or fear, Miria sends her armies to desolate rebellious provinces or simply makes an example out of them using her own considerable powers.

The seat of Miria's power is a floating island home to Undrossen Castle, her abode and throne. This grand castle with its many rooms and dungeons floats leisurely through the air, its ominous silhouette and ponderous mass a source of dread wherever its shining crown slowly creeps over the horizon. From here Miria commands her vast slave armies and extended bureaucracy, as well as engaging in her many experiments and keeping her collections. Yet not all is grim and dark in Undrossen; the castle includes an extensive library with many priceless manuscripts, a vast garden teeming with plants and animals, an opera stage, an orchestral pit, a dance hall, and much more. Miria may be an evil overlady, but this is an age where people demand that their evil overladies must be erudite, educated, sophisticated women well-versed in the literary and creative arts!

Though Miria has vast human resources at her disposal, the queen prefers to use subtlety whenever possible. Amongst her most effective organizations is the greatly feared Big Sister network, a sophisticated, clandestine circle of female agents who specialize in politics, subterfuge, and control. Big Sisters are spies and commissars, infiltrating enemy courts to seduce and intimidate enemies of interest and rooting out disloyalty in the Ilraven Empire's own ranks. Well-trained in the arts of the courtesan almost from birth, Big Sisters are infused with some of Miria's own power which enables them to unbirth others. They can patiently extract information from unbirthed suspects and mentally manipulate others as part of their standard operating procedures. A Big Sister may even project her mind into a target; usually this manifests at first as foreign emotions or sensations intruding into a person's thoughts, but as her influence grows the Big Sister eventually forces her target's thinking and behavior to align with her desires. Victims act and dress progressively more feminine as their thoughts are slowly overpowered and forced into submission, the Big Sister relentlessly turning her hapless target into a doll for her mind to inhabit until the target is imprisoned and inert in his own body. Such mental domination is taxing for the Big Sister however and requires a great investment in time and effort to accomplish.

The Queen Herself
Given what she has built and the experience of her long life, it should be no surprise that Miria is a subtle and cunning woman who is sophisticated and highly educated. She can maintain an intelligent discussion of a number of topics and is markedly more tolerant towards those whom she feels have something to teach her, to the point where she excuses outright insubordination. Miria rarely displays her emotions or her intent, having long ago learned the value of listening and contemplation, and she hides her true state of mind behind a veil of dissemblance amongst all but the closest of her subjects.

Amongst her children the queenly mask drops. Miria is warm, kind, and affectionate to Rae, Beau, and Jacqueline, considering them her most precious relationships. Even on official business she exudes a familiarity quite at odds with her official role as dictator and queen when her children are present. To Miria, family transcends empire; the queen has few friends, but the few whom she has she also treats as equals rather than sovereign and subject. Miria's rift with Rae is the matter which pains her heart the most as she still loves her wayward daughter dearly, the queen being known to wreak savage vengeance even on her own servants who would harm her eldest. Miria was the dominating presence in the lives of all her children growing up; nowadays, she is still close to Beauregard and Jacqueline, taking an interest in her heiress-apparent's education and upbringing.

Being an immortal queen, Miria's current body is not her original body, and her soul can inhabit the flesh of others at will. Miria keeps a number of spare bodies in case something happens to her current body in spite of all her precautions and is known to prefer tall, classically-beautiful women to possess, though she has been known to assume others from time to time. She keeps the gods whom she has conquered eternally digesting in her stomach, condemned to an endlessly tortured existence where their souls are perpetually seared by her acids. Miria's powers, both innate and stolen, are vast; she wields them with consummate skill and subtlety honed by long years of experience.

Observers have noted that Miria rarely destroys her opponents outright. Instead, she prefers to turn them against each other when possible, or to push them into impossible situations. The queen's sadistic bent is strong in such cases, something which deeply disturbs both Rae and Jacqueline and has been known to give even Beauregard pause in a few situations.

Miria is also a collector of trophies and people. Not all of her vast collection of dresses, shoes, and jewelry were crafted by the royal artisans in her employ. Many are simply victims who crossed her to find themselves magically transformed into dressy slippers, furnishings, or articles of clothing. Her Guarden statues serve as mute testaments to her power, being beautiful women who were transformed into living glass and quite transparent to the eye. These statues are soft but cold to the touch and their transparent wombs still capable of supporting life, so that Queen Miria often uses them to store valuable prisoners for public display. She or her Big Sister agents can also animate these statues. The queen sometimes sends her prisoners home encased in her Guarden statues to warn the horrified populace of the consequences of opposing her.

Character notes
- Miria is Seles' foster mother, though she is not as kind to Seles as to her own children.
- Though Jacqueline is far stronger than her mother in raw magical power, Miria has always won their contests by pure skill.
- Her name was originally Miria Ilkha, and she changed her name to Ilraven to commemorate her closest friend who perished in the Mortal Revolution.
- Besides transformation, she also shrinks people and sews them into her clothes or encases them in jewels.

OOC Information
- While Miria is powerful, I will not godmode with her ever. What I do will be consistent with a scene idea worked out between myself and my partner. Of course, that doesn't mean that she will be on an equal footing with every adventurer that comes along either.
- She can also be played out of her setting. The modern day might prove interesting for her to explore.
- Please ask if you have further questions.
