Mallo is a very unusual Mareep from a strange world, called into the world of Mystery Dungeons by forces unknown, presumably for noble purposes. However, the sheepy has long abandoned his duty to prey on the rescue teams most other turned Pokemon form, corrupting them into his own band of vagabonds to terrorize explorers and their rescuers alike.
The first thing most people notice about Mallo is that his fur coat isn't actually made of fur - rather, an extremely thick, wobbly jelly substance. The next is that not only is Mallo quite domineering for his type, he actually isn't a herbivore, and he's none too hesitant to demonstrate. The last is that such said coat is in fact made out of people, still sentient enough for him to enjoy teasing them on occasion, but not enough to move or reply in any fashion.
Mallo can assert his dominance in one of many ways:
- Swallowing the victim whole. His enzymes encase them in a membrane as they digest, breaking them down into a jelly-like consistency before being absorbed into Mallo's jelly coat, where they live out the rest of their days.
- Engulfing the victim in his jelly coat. When an extremity is placed inside, it becomes extremely difficult to remove, and most prey inadvertently place themselves deeper inside when they try to push themselves free until they sink inside. While they don't digest per se, they're still completely trapped for as long as Mallo sees fit, and he can hide an entire human being in his coat without any sign of them.
- Corrupting victims into his personal minions. Mallo's jelly coat displays sticky, infectious qualities when it leaves his immediate presence, and he can launch them as projectiles to exploit this deliberately. It slowly sinks into their body and turns their flesh to jello, morphing their shape and their mind to a more submissive form to him. While they can take the shape of many other Pokemon, Mallo most prefers minions of Buneary, Gulpin and fellow Mareep, and depending on the prey's mass can potentially make several of either out of one prey.
- Said minons can swallow prey too, but are incapable of digesting them. The purposes for this vary - sometimes they're delivered to Mallo for a meal, but often they'll instead permanently entrap a given prey for both the crew's amusement, and the potential for using them as hostages and ransom tickets.
