In the yokai world, the things that give you influence and status are breeding and power; coming from a powerful line of yokai is to get you revered on its own, but pairing that with being powerful is what counts for more. More power means a longer life, and a longer life means even more power and starting your own powerful line all your own.

Many active deities in the realm aren't actually deities, but are simply yokai that strive for more power. Faunus is one of those, having lived longer than most active deities. His line is vast and extremely well-respected in the yokai community... Even the wretched hanyou that corrupted his pure line (thus creating Gupi's clan). The kemonomimi that make up the Verity line were ravenous monsters that were a scourge on the land, ruining life and disrupting the order of yokai society.

It was brought to Faunus that his name was being sullied by these monstrosities and thus, he came up with a plan. He went on a brief hiatus from his sit-in at his palace to start the project-- famine for the Verity. He would put their appetites in check in the best way that he knew how: with indoctrinating him into a strict and ludicrous religion.

Sure enough, it worked. The hanyou became vegetarian and eating for them became something they obsessed over on the other end of the spectrum. He'd done his duty and no longer would those abominations cause him strife-- and in addition to that, he'd have them to worship him for a while, as he appeared to them as a god and that would mean he'd become stronger.

With his task finished, he went back to building his stronghold in yokai politics. Despite normal sheep being seen as a weak species, sheep yokai are a brutal, tight-knit clan that eliminate foes with ease. Of course, they are only the way that they are due to Faunus's guidence. Before he took power, they were meek and were stepped on and taken advantage of. Now they use their innate strength and large numbers to dominate all they can, making them (Faunus especially) a force to be reckoned with by any that oppose them.

Fortunately, Faunus himself is agreeable enough to have made allies with most individuals and groups he's come across. At least, he's able to present himself as being very kind and agreeable. However, in private, there is very clearly a darkness present. That kind and gentle light in his eyes fades and is replaced by cold scorn.
