Personality From her very genetic make-up it's clear that Astute's parentage was quite the outgoing type, with 'faerie traits' being one of the few alterations from baseline human made alongside the traditional medical enhancements employed to reduce future issues in life. Quite the variety it was too, with everything from skin-tone and aesthetically improved ears to a tail and the accompanying improvement in balance that came with it. With parents willing to 'spice up' her life as such before she was even more than a few cells, was it any wonder that they'd nurture her along the same path in childhood?

Astute – clear from her name that her parents weren't quite the norm – was relatively friendly throughout her upbringing, despite the occasional nay-sayer to her early differentiation of genetics - “How could your parents do such a thing?” - as much as she could be without incurring the disproving wraith of young social circles. If anything, the only thing she would regret in her early years of maturity was the joking-nickname derived from her given name, 'Ass', not quite the best label to be hailed by across a crowded room.

Of course, such a character couldn't simply lose herself within the square peg in square hole that was the standardised job-placements of the day and age, instead the young 'faerie', as her genetic status had pigeon-termed her slipped into one of the bustling ombudsmen agencies, starting up as a simple troubleshooter for your average working-class customer. Her way of manners tended to go down well between customers, and on the corporate end – while initially put off by her degree of gen-mods – she showed a surprising degree of aptitude for accommodating the needs of the bigger picture within reason.

Such a starting point allowed her to build up a portfolio of interactions as she went on, all leading up to that wonderful day Astute could simply cut herself loose from the corporate webbing surrounding her, and fly free into the world of freelancing. Now, she spends her days picking which clients to deal with, solving problems as best she can and generally getting the best out of life.

What better a way to sort out deals than sat atop a roof watching life go by? It's just how an ombudswoman rolls.


Background It was always an assured thing that companies would take over the world, what with the exponential growth of capitalism and the steady collapse of the domino pyramid that was the older regimes. They took well to handling the various logistical requirements of society, with the old taxs turning into contracts and monthly payments and generally allowing for a good deal more freedom of choice. Not everything was smooth though, with what had always been a corporate failure expanding to national levels, costumer service just hadn't been designed to deal with the blame for everything after all.

On the level of policies and sweeping statements things were all peachy, responses could be brainstormed and trialled before being put into action in the majority of cases, but where it all broke down was the customer-corporate interface. The masses were easily pleased, peer pressure coming into play to seal the cracks, however individuals tended to stand to ground, to play irrational with the voice on the other end of the communications link over 'their rights'. That was when the corporations, found themselves turning to third party solutions to settle their issues.

The concept was simple, the customer would pay a varying fee while stating their complaint to the intermediary, whom would then attempt to resolve the issue to the contentment of both corporation and customer. With the intermediary being paid anyway and being rated upon their performance by both ends, it was in their best interest to satisfy all involved, thus entering even the complaint department fully into the capitalist system.

In time, where genetic-modification, bodily-augmentation and compact electronics had all reached a state which might have been considered 'post-modern' by the standards of the age of nationstates, the role of the intermediary, or 'ombudsman' as it took upon the ancient term found itself nicely niched within society. High level meetings might be accompanied by an ombudsman to smooth over misunderstandings, and while it might not be a job held in excessively high regard – especially for some of the freelancing members of the profession, it was still a vital role to be played.
