In her human life, Zoya Bradford was a troubled young adult from an abusive home who wanted a way out. With her family's crippling debt making home-life nearly unbearable, paired with the death of her only friend (a boy she'd known since childhood and the only person in her life to really accept her, despite her horrible outlook and home-life), she was desperate for something-- anything-- to make the pain stop. So one night she prayed. She wept and prayed out loud to anything and everything that could hear her, begging for some respite from the hurt of her life.

But instead of a deity or some sort of divine or celestial being coming to answer her pleas, she was approached by a demon.

＂Ｆｒｅｔｎｏｔ，ｃｈｉｌｄ．Ｉ＇ｖｅｏｎｌｙｃｏｍｅｔｏｈｅｅｄｙｏｕｒｒｅｑｕｅｓｔ．＂

She felt it speak as much as she heard it, the words seeming to slide across her skin in black tendrils that burned cold. Immediately, despite its attempt to soothe her, she felt fear clutch at her.

She'd done something wrong. Nothing was supposed to come-- and if something did come, it was supposed to be, like, an angel or something. Something warm. Something welcoming. This blackness that reeked of death and burned all of the light out of the area-- this dank dark that shrouded her in cool humidity... This wasn't what she had called.

"ᴮᵘᵗ ʷʰᵃᵗ ᶜᵒᵘˡᵈ ᴵ ᵈᵒˀ" she asked meekly. "ᵂʰᵃᵗ ʷᶤˡˡ ʸᵒᵘ ᵈᵒˀ"

She felt herself trembling, terrified of what she felt was the only thing that was to come of this encounter-- her death. She didn't want to die, even if she'd attempted to take her own life in the past. She had never wanted to die-- only to escape.

＂Ｉｃａｎｔａｋｅｙｏｕａｗａｙｆｒｏｍｔｈｉｓｐｌａｃｅ ‒ ｆｒｏｍｔｈｉｓｐａｉｎ．Ｙｏｕｎｅｖｅｒｈａｖｅｔｏｇｏｂａｃｋ．．．Ｙｏｕｗｉｌｌｂｅｒｅｂｏｒｎ．Ｙｏｕｗｉｌｌｂｅｓｔｒｏｎｇｅｒ．Ｎｏｂｏｄｙｗｉｌｌｈｕｒｔｙｏｕａｇａｉｎ．＂

These words seemed to quell her racing heart and calm her fraying nerves. The hope that suddenly bloomed within her drove her to grasp at the small thread of chance for something better. She clung to his chance like a drowning man to a buoy.

Though she had the small nagging in the back of her mind telling her not to go through with whatever it was this demon would propose, she went along with it all. And thus Zoya the Jailer was born...

Zoya is the being born from demonic experimentation. She is a living prison for demons that have outlived their usefulness or that have defected/committed treason against the crown of Hell (like Vaako, Anita, Kriia, and Shameless) and holds their souls inside of her body.

She was created when it was realised that it was more difficult to contain rogue demons than the top oligarchy realised. At first, she was merely a 'containment unit' for these demons, but after realising the strength of her own demonic power, she was given the tasks of 'reformatting' of her body's 'additional inhabitants.'

Trivia:
1. Zoya was the first human-originating demon ever made that had never actually died before their conversion. It is rumoured that this is the reason why many things that trap/hurt other demons don't hurt her.

2. Inside of Zoya's "torture gut", time seems to be slowed down exponentially. A year in the real world passes as a thousand years in the "internment chamber." In addition to this, her "torture gut" is much larger on the inside than they seem to be on the outside.

3. Because of her immense power being too much for a normal body, much of her demonic energy is stored in the third eye, which is concealed by her bangs (along with the Trapping eye, which is used to prevent any demonic souls from leaving her body). The third eye seems to be sentient and able to function independently of Zoya. It is her, but at the same time, it is not her. It is spiteful and a force to be reckoned with once scorned. This divide in her power helps to make her more controllable by her "superiors."

4. Zoya's transformation into a demon was actually approved of by Heaven. It was the first time that Heaven and Hell really agreed on anything. The angels agreed to it because they don't want all of the deserters/usurpers/traitors of hell running free. Rogue demons can cause a lot of damage, you see. Better that they sacrifice one human rather than allow that chaos.
