What is a Yuki-Onna?

Yuki-onna (雪女?, snow woman) is a Youkai in Japanese folklore, normally appearing on snowy nights as a beautiful woman with long hair. Her inhumanly pale or even transparent skin makes her blend into the snowy landscape. She sometimes wears a white kimono, but other legends describe her as nude, with only her face and hair standing out against the snow Despite her inhuman beauty, her eyes can strike terror into mortals. She floats across the snow, leaving no footprints, and she can transform into a cloud of mist or snow if threatened.


Yuki-onna are generally portrayed as calm, timid and amazingly polite beings, often times taking people into their homes to dote over them immensely, though in their politeness lies their sinister...but ultimately tragic nature. They are easily the most kind of Youkai, but they literally feed of the body heat of living being, eventually causing them to freeze to death from skin to skin contact... And though they need the heat as sustenance, they become heartbroken with each death, seeking companionship more then anything, their very nature also giving them the nickname of 'Forlorn maiden'.

Background: Yuuki had always lived a rough life, her home having been long since destroyed by both vandals and wandering priests, she had been literally forced to see horrors and atrocities that even she, as a youkai, could not have hoped to handle at the young age they happened.

Her parents, tortured and raped in front of her, her home burned to the ground, even she was beaten to the point of near death, till they grew tired of her and left her to die on the freezing mountain. She lived, of course, and that day has not spoken a word, the little one having been a mute ever since.

Although she doesn't speak, she did not completely shy away from the world, soon learning that there were people who would accept her, even help her as she begun her travels through the world...this, in turn, gave her a simple kindness that could not be tainted.


Personality: Well...the first main point is that Yuuki doesn't talk...she never talks, she never will talk, and though she might make a small squeak or a cute little sigh from time to time...she just doesnt say anything. Such a way of life has led her to become almost overbearingly self sufficient, she preferring to take care of herself at all times, since it was too hard to use her hands and attempt to sign what she needs to someone.

Aside from that, she is a very sweet girl, enjoying the company of people very much, despite not being able to talk. She also enjoys listening to people when they are in a conversation, or talking to her about something, communicating with them as best she can.

Physically, though, she is literally as cold as ice...though she looks like a cute little girl , albeit a bit pale, she still is very much a snow demon, her body below freezing temperatures at all times. Consequently, heat makes her immensely sick and weak. She is like any other yuki onna though, needing body heat to survive, though she tries her hardest not to feed on sentient beings...too much heat, though can kill her within seconds, so be careful!

Though the legends speak of most Yuki-onna being in little to no clothing, Yuuki was given a beautiful kimono, made of magic silk that would grow to fit her body perfectly all through her life, she never taking it off except to clean it and herself.

Powers: As described above, if yuuki ever gets into too much trouble, she can simply turn herself into mist and slip out of anyone's grasp, making her almost impossible to capture. She also has an amazingly potent hand at ice and winter based magics.

Rejuvination: An ironic gift she had been taught, if she focuses hard enough, she can in tune her chilling magic to mend cuts and even bring plants and people back to life, albeight a bit frostier then it was before, but still alive and temporarily unaffected by the heat-sapping she performs. She can only perform this art once per day, though she can spread it to an area nearly the size of the park, knocking herself unconscious after doing so.

Chillfire: Easily her most dangerous technique, She can draw up such cold temperatures that not even a yuki-onna could survive, literally burning a foe with the frosty chill, it is called chillfire both because of the ironic freeze-burning and its ethereally blue flame-like appearance, her favorite form of chillfire involves creating beautiful cold-elemented butterflies to either amuse herself, or inflict harsh cold-burns onto her enemies.

A little bit older, a little bit wiser, though just as silent as before. She has grown up into a rather beautiful woman, ditching the Kimono of her youth for some more modern, and clearly sexy clothing. She is nowhere near as shy as before, now in total control of her icy aura, she only releases it when she needs to feed...or if someone really throws her off.

Mist form:As described above, if yuuki ever gets into too much trouble, she can simply turn herself into mist and slip out of anyone's grasp, making her almost impossible to capture.

Ice Manipulation: Studying for years, she can now form ice into shapes with mere thought, and little concentration on her part, even able to create ice from the water in the air.

Ice aura: Normally her presence is impossible to handle for too long, though in her later years she has learned to be able to completely calm it into a single spot in her body, and though she is still cold naturally, it isnt nearly as dangerous as before.

Chillfire: Easily her most dangerous technique, She can draw up such cold temperatures that not even a yuki-onna could survive, literally burning a foe with the frosty chill, it is called chillfire both because of the ironic freeze-burning and its ethereally blue flame-like appearance, her favorite form of chillfire involves creating beautiful cold-elemented butterflies to either amuse herself, or inflict harsh cold-burns onto her enemies, or to create a harsh flamethrower of chillfire from an outstretched palm.
