Vsalis

Spelunking is a popular pastime for many adventurers, and even those who don’t do it professionally sometimes get the urge to explore a cave. In the dark, with little more than a flashlight, it’s easy to get lost. And that’s what Vsalis hopes will happen to those who enter her dominion.

Chased out of her birth catacombs by a dragon many years ago, Vsalis was separated from her parents and brother and thankfully found her own near the park. She is a seventeen foot long naga with gray skin, black scales, and darker gray hair with silver highlights. Even with her unique skin tone, the feature that stands out the most are her eyes…or what are considered her eyes. Skin covers her “eyes”, making them into blank orbs similar to some deep sea fish*. They aren’t completely useless, though; they’re extremely sensitive to the amount of light, so shining a flashlight directly into them is bound to result in a hissing agitated Vsalis. Her blindness is hardly a problem in the dark, and other senses such as touch, hearing and smell are heightened greatly.

Vsalis isn’t a monster, nor is she completely innocent. She gets bored and lonely in her catacombs, and visitors brighten her day. However, hunger and friendship are equal desires, and it depends on the person in question which desire prevails. She’s been tricked by promises of people bringing her back food before, and doesn’t plan on falling for it again.

Things that are sure to get on her bad side: Using her blindness as a weakness, loud noises/obnoxious smells/bright lights, people who automatically want to slay her, etc.

Vsalis lives underground in a maze of 67 connected caves, making it easy for explorers to get lost. There are a total of five entrances from the surface, set out like points of a star. Vsalis has made a point of decorating, though most of the decorations are either incredibly morbid or cheap enough to be found at a dollar store. After years of moving around, she has the place memorized, but she’s got one other trick up her sleeve; echolocation. A series of clicks and hisses give her ears a pretty good idea of her lay-out, and whether someone is sneaking around. That is, if she hadn’t heard their heartbeat.

But yes, there is one stereotype Vsalis plays to of the cave-dwelling monster, and that is her hoard. One of the 67 caves is her treasure room, guarded jealously. Those who make friends with the naga may find themselves allowed inside and can pick a trinket or two from her collection. After all, giving is much better than receiving. What’s in there? It ranges from expensive clothing to video game consoles to jewelry to weapons, gathered from her prey over the years. There are very few things she’s attached to, so her friends can usually take whatever they want as a sign of her goodwill.

Gods help whoever storm her catacombs in order to kill her or steal from her, though. She can get quite defensive.
