Background/History Vera was born to more tribal nekos on the outskirts of her suburban home. Unlike many tribes, this one believed a sacrifice must be given to the gods in order to prevent disaster from falling upon their home. Vera herself was raised to be one of the sacrificial maidens; though, the head priest of the tribe believed strongly that suffering would make the girls strong and thus a better sacrifice to please their gods. This lead to the neko being tortured in various ways. She often was bled with leeches, whipped, stoned, and often subjected to harmful magic that caused her immense suffering. Despite this, Vera kept a smile about her face and often tried to comfort others. Even though many refused to touch her because of her being the “sacred sacrifice.” So despite Vera’s kindness, she was left alone. It came to the point where Vera began wanting to die. The day of the ceremony, Vera accepted her fate. As a 14-year-old, Vera was ready to pass into the realm of spirits so that her pain might be eased into whatever goddess lie in wait. Vera waited quietly before the high priest finally dug a knife into her chest, ending her life in sacrifice for their goddess. A goddess which did not approve of their actions. When Vera came face-to-face with the goddess she had hoped was far more kind than the people she grew up with, she was far from surprised. Though, the goddess had a gift for Vera. Instead of simply dying, Vera would be given immortality in return for becoming a healer and protector of the weak. Though Vera was afraid to go back, she accepted the goddess’s gift and was given her life back. Vera awoke and warned the village of the high priest’s wrongdoing before disappearing. Since then, Vera has trained herself in healing and protective magic as a student while working as a waitress. Despite her lack of work experience, her warm personality and kindness won over the workers and customers alike. To the point where she was given a manager position herself! |
