Selena is a woman that is deceptively kind at first glance, with a gentle smile on her face and a kind demeanor that makes it easy to trust the vampire princess' words and actions. This however would be a mistake as Selena is functionally incapable of viewing regular people as something worth protecting or as something other than particularly interesting food. This is why she travels as often as she does before her prey can gather the courage to attempt staking her. Not that such would likely work, but the mess isn't worth the satisfaction of dropping the facade.
The reason for this lack of humanity is because Selena never was a human unlike the majority of vampires including her own companion Elise is because Selena was born as a rare class of being known as a 'True Vampire'. She was not turned, she was born as a member of the race that were the forbears of the beings much more commonly known as a vampire by the common folk of this day and age. Most of these True Vampires have long since died out or are past the point of being able to reproduce, but their inability to die of natural causes has kept a few remnants alive while one of their numerous abilities allowed them to create spawn to serve them...the vampires people know and fear. Selena cannot view humanity as worthwhile because to her species, they exist as her prey and nothing else, she never had a period of life among them to grow some fondness for the people beneath her on the food chain.
This doesn't mean she hasn't been curious about mortals and their happenings, it just means that she struggles in her interactions with them and has lead Selena to become one of the most prolific creators of vampire spawn among her remaining kind. She has learned a lot about mortals thanks to her spawn and hopes to learn more in the future, but these relationships are often short-lived after Selena learns all that she wants to know. At that point she deems her spawn's training to be finished and gives them their independence back to do as they wish, often to bloody results due to what they learned from her.
It was inevitable that Selena would want to find more permanent companionship though and that is where her current servant comes in. Elise was selected to be more than a passing fancy for the ancient princess due to having true vampire ancestry deep in her lineage as well as similar..equipment to her new mistress. The two are very close and Elise often acts as a liaison to the modern world for Selena..
