Since becoming the Princess of Friendship, Twilight Sparkle found that she had inherited various responsibilities around Ponyville, some of which she hadn't known of until becoming a princess. One of these came to her one night when Princess Celestia, her former teacher and mentor, came to visit her in the middle of the night, telling her it was time to learn how to perform an important nightly errand--being Ponyville's Tooth Fairy!

The task of being a Tooth Fairy is given to the most important ponies in all of the major cities of Equestria. Princess Celestia, for instance, is Canterlot's Tooth Fairy, while Princess Luna elected to take charge as Manehattan's Tooth Fairy upon her return, with Princess Cadence being the Tooth Fairy for the Crystal Empire, respectfully. Until Twilight became a princess and set up her palace near the town, Mayor Mare had been serving as Ponyville's Tooth Fairy.

When a pony is tasked with serving as a Tooth Fairy, they are given special medication to take before going to bed. The medication triggers when the pony enters a state of REM sleep, and the alicorn magic inside the easily swallowed capsule spreads through the pony's body, transferring their consciousness into a Familiar that is formed inside the pony's mouth. This Familiar bears a resemblance to one of the tiny creatures known as Breezies, and the pony is given full conscious control of this Familiar during an 8-hour sleep period. During the time the pony's consciousness is inside the Familiar's body, the pony's normal body cannot be roused.



A Tooth Fairy's role is, of course, to visit fillies and colts who have lost baby teeth and replace the teeth hidden under their pillow with bits while the filly or colt is asleep. While most visits go rather smoothly, sometimes--depending on how heavy a dreamer the filly or colt is--things can get rather... awkward...



Even more dire consequences can occur if the Tooth Fairy is caught... While most fillies and colts do believe in the Tooth Fairy, that doesn't mean they would take too kindly to waking up to some strange tiny creature trying to take their tooth...



Then there are the dangers of actually getting to the desired house, dealing with nightly predators such as owls that would love nothing better than to gobble up a helpless little Breezy... However, despite the hazards to the Breezy Familiar, the pony is completely safe, and will return to their own body if the Familiar is killed or destroyed, finding themselves waking up in bed as if from a bad dream.

Every night from midnight to 8 am, Twilight uses this new medicine to shed her former body and inhabit this much smaller form. After she completes the list of ponies she needs to visit for that night, she's free to do whatever she wants as a Breezy for the remainder of her time, including sneaking into her friends' or teacher's rooms for some late night "exploration"... However, on occasion, she will take a pill during the day and inhabit her Breezy body just to have some shrunken fun around Ponyville!

When it is nearing the end of the 8-hour period, Twilight must find some way for her Familiar body to die or be killed so she can wake up. After 8 hours, a new consciousness to replace her own will start to form in her old body, and if it manages to do so her body will wake up without her inside it! Twilight will be condemned to spend the rest of her life as a Breezy, watching her old body go on with its daily routine as if nothing was wrong... However, there is a certain... quality with this new consciousness... It will bear a hunger for any creature tiny enough to consume, especially ones that look like Twilight... If Twilight dies after this new consciousness has taken hold of her old body, she will not be able to return to it...
