The Heartless

The Heartless are beings manifested out of the darkness that exists throughout worlds, residing in the hearts of their denizens. Their name is derivative not of the fact tha they lack hearts, but that they are manifested hearts that are devoid of all emotion. These beings come in two types: Purebloods and Emblems and they come in many subspecies.

Purebloods

Pureblood Heartless are entirely ink black in most situations, some have tints of color or gradients and usually come with beady yellow eyes. They do not have the emblems that the other type of Heartless does. These ones are generated naturally from darkness within people's hearts. Typically, they are created when someone's heart is swallowed by darkness, but they have the possibility of being drawn out by dark beings such as Maleficent or Ansem, Seeker of Darkness. There are also dark keyblades that are able to draw them out. An example of these guys are Shadows, the ink black black like Heartless that are most common. These Heartless disappear in puffs of black smoke upon defeat.

Emblem Heartless

Emblem Heartless are a much different story in creation. These are created artificially by a machine designed to reproduce the process of one's heart being consumed by the darkness, the same one that creates Purebloods. Once the machine was activated, most stolen hearts (as long as they contain darkness) become Emblems. They are more varied in color and design in comparison to their Pureblood siblings, even taking the form of some objects. They'll usually take shape of whatever would fit a world they're on the most. An example of these types would be the subtype known as Soldiers, ones that run around in helms with red, clawed fingers.

Behaviour

The Heartless tend to act mindless and on instinct. Their instinct is to consume hearts in order to create more of them. Their only true goal is to find hearts, including the hearts of worlds which are accessed through keyholes. The hearts of worlds are what they wish to get the most. When they consume the colossal hearts of worlds, the remains form new worlds such as Traverse Town or the End of the World.

They will also seek out keyblade wielders, which are their biggest threat. In order to find these wielders, they use the keyblade as a sort of tracking beacon to home in on so they can strike. They would do their best to get their hands on the powerful heart that wields a keyblade.

As mindless as they are, they can be commandable. Heartless rank themselves with more powerful Heartless such as Guard Armor, or they can have a sort of de facto leader, such as Xehanort's Heartless, Ansem. Those with a strong affinity for darkness and contain strong willscan also have sway of them. People that are fine examples of this are Maleficent, though they are put at risk as the Heartless wil strike at any sign of weakness so they can consume their hearts. If there are multiple of these people trying to take control of them, they will usually side with the stronger. Nobodies, their counterparts, can control them without risk as they do not have hearts whatsoever. Though in worlds or realms that are closest to the darkness, they will not be able to be controlled by anyone and it is advised that people not try to control them in such lands.

The Realm of Darkness

The home to all Heartless and where some of the strongest can be found. The Realm of Darkness is created from the darkness in the hearts of people from all worlds. It is also known as the Dark World and is most easily accessed through the usage of certain teleportation powers, like a Corridors of Darkness used by those from Organization 13. Though be warned, travelling through Corridors of Darkness can corrupt one's unprotected heart. This can be avoided through materials meant to resist such corruption, such as keyblade armor and the black coats used by the members of Organization 13 or their allies.
