Made using the Template!

The Feralnomicon is intended as a catch-all alt for playing feral or monstrous preds. There are SO MANY I like playing that I cannot list them all, but keep in mind I don't like everything. If something isn't listed, ask! There's so many different settings for scenes too and Feras itself can teleport the reader to a pocket dimension or summon creatures to any location when being read. Make it fun!

  • Species: Magic Book
  • Nickname: Feras
  • Gender: Book
  • Height: 10"
  • Weight: 9"
  • Eyes: Bright yellow
  • Age: Old enough to have documented almost every creature
  • Occupation: Troublemaker
  • Orientation: Literally cannot fuck

The Feralnomicon began as a simple compendium of beasts written by an overly fascinated author who travelled the world seeing all the wonderful creatures that they could. As they wrote and drew in the book, their descriptions grew so vivid and lifelike that one could swear the diagrams on the pages were moving by themselves. Unfortunately, one day during a safari, the author of the book was snagged by a particularly voracious beast and was churned inside its sagging belly as it sauntered away, content with its meal. Left alone, the book's pages were left uncompleted as it collected dust in the harsh wilderness... until it was discovered by a particularly gifted mage. Reading through the book, she realized that the love the author had put into the book had made it the perfect candidate for an enchantment, and so the mage cast a spell that brought the book to life, a face forming on its cover. However, little did the mage know that her spell had done more than just bring the book to life -- the creatures inside it also began to stir... and with its compendium not yet complete, the book realized it had a long way to go to ensure it became capable of holding knowledge of every creature in every world and every dimension, not only completing the wish of its origianl creator but even going beyond their wildest dreams! But first, it would need to get rid of the mage that had given it life. In an act of ironic mischief, the book, now calling itself Feras, encouraged her to read a page... only to find herself face to face with a particularly hungry lizard! Chomped up and swallowed down in mere seconds, the lizard disappeared into the wilderness as Feras floated, a toothy grin on its face.

Now, Feras seeks refuge, places in which it can observe the behaviour of beasts as they gorge themselves on delicious meals. Posing as a harmless book, it has found its way into many libraries and schools and homes, each time the new 'owner' meeting a rather sudden fate. One day, it will understand every beast, to its full extent, and when it does... well, that's a surprise.

Amphibians

The book goes into significant detail about amphibious species, describing all sorts of different frogs, toads, newts, salamanders... fortunately, there are some short and sweet descriptions listed so you don't have to read through everything right now!

Amphibious creatures thrive on both land and water. They will be often found near rivers, lakes or swamps. While some can live out of water for a good amount of time, others will suffer if not near a sustainable water source. Most amphibians are four legged at adulthood, however some are born with only tails or two legs. Interestingly, they also lay their eggs before fertilization, meaning that female amphibians often lay eggs without any help from males! Instead, the males will fertilize the eggs afterwards.
Character Image
Of particular note of amphibians is how voracious they are. They are almost singleminded in their pursuit of food, using a variety of tactics such a long ranged tongue snatches, ambushes, or flat out just overpowering its prey! If you are small enough to fit in their mouth, they will try to eat you, and believe me, their mouths are a lot bigger than they look.

Frogs

The most commonly recognized amphibian, frogs are particularly capable of snatching prey before they even have a chance of reacting to the loud SMACK against their backside! A frog's tongue is retractable and incredibly sticky, the moment it latches onto a target it grabs firmly against them and immediately attempts to reel them back into its awaiting jaw. However, it is not limited to using its tongue, as its powerful back legs make it capable of hopping long distances to chase after prey and jump over obstacles! They're also surprisingly capable swimmers despite having such strange legs. I have no doubt if they were bigger, humans would be beneath them on the food chain...

Salamanders

Most salamanders resemble lizards, four legs with short, stubby snouts, slim and lithe bodies and a large tail. Surprisingly, some salamanders are capable of regenerating limbs, and others are even toxic! They have many advantages over other predators in aquatic settings. I picked one up the other day and, compared to a lizard, its skin was completely smooth and slimy! I've seen all kinds of Character Imagesalamanders, but typically there are two main kinds, those which look like lizards, such as a newt and those which look like eels, like the amphiuma! An incredibly varied species and oppurtunistic predators which can use teeth, powerful throat muscles and strange tongues to capture prey, I hope to learn more about them!

Toads

While most people seperate frogs and toads, they are essentially the same species, even belonging to the same order of animals: Anura! However, their behaviours are pretty different! Frogs are known for large, hopping jumps, and while toads are capable of them, they're usually much slower and... I suppose the correct word is 'thoughtful' with their movements. The average toad is also extremely territorial and will react badly to intruders to its territory, inflating itself and using its presence to intimidate and, if all else fails, attacking with ferocity! I saw one snatch a mouse almost as big as itself once and devour it with frenzied swallows for daring to stay near it for a few seconds too long...

Aquatic

Flipping through the pages, you eventually come to a section describing underwater species! In addition to fish, octopuses and eels, there are descriptions of crocodiles, dolphins and even... hippos? Just what did this author see out there...?

For this section, I'll be including all kinds of species that primarily spends most of their life in an aquatic environment. This obviously includes fish of all kinds, but I'll also include aquatic mammals such as hippos in this section for now. I'll probably need to clean this up later...

Fish

There are so many different varieties of fish I'd be here all day trying to list them all. So many different classes and orders of fish, yet I'd probably make things easier just by listing species! Goldfish, sharks, eels, catfish, seahorse, anglerfish, gulpers... they're all so different and yet all so similar! A fish for our purposes is a completely aquatic based animal that has gills, and does not have any limbs with fingers, instead having fins. Heck, some fish like eels don't even have fins! As fish are so different from one another, their hunting tactics can be particularly unique, however at the end of the day, any fish that is carnivorous is going to attempt to grab you in its jaws and swallow you down, using its strength or its superior mastery of its habitat to devour you! Character Image

Mollusca

What an interesting collection of animals! Molluscs include snails, octopuses (yes, this IS the correct plural for octopus!), cuttlefish and bivalves! These creatures are all so different that you'd think they had no shared characteristics at all... snails such as the cone snail are dangerous predators which swallow prey whole after paralyzing them, octopuses wrangle prey in their tentacles and devour them using their hungry beak, clams trap prey inside their shells and digest them much like the venus fly trap! Honestly, its fortunate I have all the time in the world to write this compendium, there must be thousands of different molluscs and they're all so unique.

Aquatic Mammals

Dolphins, hippos and seals, oh my! Another particularly varied group of creatures, dolphins resemble fish but breathe air and demonstrate many traits unique to mammals, such as intelligence and a playful nature... altough they are also known to seek pleasure and are very selfish in how they choose to pursue it. Just don't be near them when they're hungry... Whales are very similar, especially killer whales, although fortunately most are not people eaters! Seals, on the other hand, are simply adorable! They're very adept swimmers, and come up on land to rest. While omnivorous, they do feed on smaller creatures and leopard seals even eat penguins! I love their eyes...
Hippos kind of scare me a little. While cute from a distance, up close I have no doubts they could snatch up a group of people and somehow manage to choke them all down. Their massive mouths can crunch and bite and open nice and wide to catch prey and fight off intruders, and just like crocodiles they are incredibly hard to hurt effectively. If they were actually MEANT to be carnivorous, I have no doubts they'd be an apex predator, but for some reason they're content pretending to be herbivores for now...

Avians

Stopping at avians, you take a quick flick through the pages and see all the different kinds of birds they saw on their travels and... you swore you saw mention of a phoenix. Surely they aren't including myths in this book, are they...? Maybe the magic of this book isn't limited to reality!

My personal favourite, avians of all kinds really ticky my fancy! Some are pretty, some are drab, some are awesome, some are silly! They're just incredibly appealing, and like other classes of animals they're varied! They do share most of the same traits though, having a toothless beak, feathers and wings! Most are capable of flight, but others have evolved to use their wings for other purposes. All birds lay eggs and care for their young dutifully, either nesting or carrying their eggs with them to keep them warm. Adult birds will keep food in their 'crop', a sort of pouch in their necks, to feed food they've found to their young later... better hope you aren't small enough to be fed to a chick!

Flightless birds

While most birds use their wings for flight, others have evolved in wonderful ways so that they actually never take flight! Birds such as ostritches or emus are incredibly speedy animals that run on tall legs at great speeds, particularly adept at sprinting over the plains! Their long necks give them an extremely recognizable yet goofy apperance! Meanwhile, some other birds like penguins have more evolved their wings into flippers that allow them to swim at incredible speed, their feathers giving them a streamlined body shape that practically allows them to zoom through the water, although they are quite vulnerable on land.

Birds of Prey

Perhaps some of the most skilled aerial hunters and some of the most regularly recognized, birds of prey snatch prey up in their talons and use their sharp beaks to take big bites of meat out of them! Birds of prey includes birds such as owls, hawks and falcons. In addition to the previous traits, they have impressive wingspans, incredible control of their bodies in the air, and insanely clear vision. They can spot prey from distances we couldn't even grasp! And yet, despite being such great hunters, I can't help but find them incredibly appealing, owls especially! I just wanna snuggle their feathers! Character Image

Pelicaniformes

I'm DEFINITELY not listing these guys here because I like them so much. Nope! Definitely not! Don't judge me. This is an order of birds who are most comfortable near the water, originally (and erroneously) this order was defined as birds with webbed feet, however nowadays they are grouped together based on a common ancestor. This order includes pelicans, herons, shoebills, egrets and spoonbills! Most of these birds feed primarily on fish or squid, and their nostrils are typically too thin to breathe through, meaning they have to breath through their mouths. Their beaks also stand out significantly, as they are built for catching large prey, especially in the case of pelicans and shoebills! All these birds carry themselves with grace... except for perhaps the pelican. That gangly species looks so goofy and yet... well, we've all seen proof that they can cannibalize smaller birds whole!

Small birds

Despite the larger birds being my favourites, small birds such as sparrows, finches or robins deserve to be mentioned just as much as any other bird. Typically they'll feed on berries, seeds or insects rather than large meals, although they have been known to scavenge carrion from time to time as well. Small birds will typically have different beaks depending on their diet, some with long beaks, others having more short and conical, however pretty much every one of these birds has a distinct sound they make that makes them extremely recognizable, even in urban settings. While you'd still recgonize the deafening call of a shoebill, you won't be hearing them as you're walking down the street like the constant tweet chatter of birds nesting in the trees!

Mammals

This section is so unbelievably dense, you'd swear it never ended. For certain now, you realize mythical and fictional creatures are included in this compendium, along with the normal mammals you're aware of! It seems this compendium goes on forever...

If I was gonna list my favourite mammals, we'd honestly be here all day! Something from as docile as a rabbit all the way up to a fearsome lion, mammals are probably what we're most familiar with in the animal kingdom. Varied diets, behaviours, relationships with nature and people mean that depending on where you go in the world you'll see entirely different kinds of mammals! I'll list a few by their 'orders' for now, especially my favourites, but keep in mind there's dozens of orders of mammals that aren't listed here...

Carnivora

Character Image Pretty self explanatory just from the name, this order of mammals includes a diverse amount of carnivorous animals, such as animals belonging to the suborder Feliformia, including lions, mongooses, hyenas or the house cat. Others included belong to the suborder Caniformia, such as bears, raccoons, or wolves! Feliforms typically have shorter snouts than Caniforms, as well as retractable claws and fewer teeth, as well as generally being less omnivorous, however pretty much all species belonging to the order Carnivora primarily eat meat and are hunters, some are solitary while others live in packs.

Ungulates

With so many hooved creatures, one would think we'd struggle to find a good word to describe them... thank goodness the word ungulate exists! Ungulates includes every kind of mammal that has hooves, however technically there are two orders that make them up. They are divided between even-toed ungulates and odd-toed ungulates. For some examples, animals such as giraffes, camels, boars and even whales are classed as even-toed and animals like the horse, zebra and rhinocerous are classed as odd-toed. Most ungulates are herbivorous and have four legs, although not all. Notably whales have no legs and killer whales especially are carnivorous! Its strange that they're considered in the same order as giraffes, but that's just the wonderful world we live in.

Proboscidea

This is a unique order of animals that includes only one family of animals alive today: elephants! Although, this also includes their close relatives that are now extinct, such as mammoths. The most defining characteristic of this order is their large trunk! This trunk is used for many different things, such as aiding in drinking, using it to grab things or to wash themselves. The animals belonging to this order are incredibly intelligent and emotional creatures, a healthy elephant typically living in a pack all of its life and if ever seperated from its family or if a pack member dies they become noticeably saddened... I have a great respect for these creatures, Character Image I hope to see more of them one day.

Pilosa

What a strange order of animals! Animals belonging to the Pilosa order have really only a few shared traits between them, such as having badly developed or no teeth as well as being hairy. Its made up of two families of animals: anteaters and sloths! If I was to describe this order, I'd call it: laaaaaazy! Anteaters have to eat a lot of bugs every day to keep up with their energy needs, but they can sit at anthills for ages just slurping away until their tummies are full, while sloths do very little but munch on low calorie meals all day long! Their claws are very helpful for foraging and climbing for both families, however they definitely move at very different speeds...

Rodentia, Lagomorpha and Chiroptera

I'm grouping these fellas together for now, but they're all pretty distinct in their own right! Rodentia is an order of animals primarily characterized by a single pair of big teeth in both their upper and lower jaw that never seem to stop growing! Things such as beavers, capybara or rats. Lagomorphs are almost entirely rabbits and hares, but also includes pikas! They're all herbivorous rather than omnivorous like rodents, and have no paw pads. Rabbits and hares use their powerful hind legs to hop and sprint too! Finally, Chiroptera is just a really fancy way of saying 'bat'. One cool fact about bats: they comprise over 20% of all known mammal species! There are more than a thousand different kind of bats. All bats are capable of flight, using their long, spread out 'fingers' and the thin membrane spread between them to catch the wind and take flight, and also to grab onto branches or wrap themselves up nice and warm. They typically hang from the ceiling while sleeping too! Bats have varied diets, some are carnivores, some are bloodsuckers, others are omnivores or insectivores!

Reptiles

You weren't expecting this section to be quite so large initially... but then you realized it included DINOSAURS as well. The information about them is exceptionally detailed too, despite their extinct status. How was the author even sure that these details are correct? Its a good thing you'll never come face to face with one of these... right?
Character Image
Reptiles! There are a ton of them, and there used to be even more. A reptile is a four legged (or descended from four legged) creature that is cold-blooded, lays eggs, and has scaly skin, most species tend to shed this skin every few months. Of course, all currently alive reptiles are descended from dinosaurs, and the class of 'Reptilia' was made up of many different kinds of creatures, not too dissimilar from mammals. Of course, nowadays there are only really four orders including crocodiles (and alligators!), turtles, snakes and lizards and a unique species tuatara, which despite baring a striking resemblance to other lizards is part of its own distinct order: Rhynchocephalia and is the only surviving species of said order! Must be lonely...

Snakes

Snakes and lizards are very closely related to one another, and yet have extremely different traits despite being in the same order of reptiles. Snakes themselves are long, limbless creatures which typically swallow their prey whole, and have a variety of hunting methods to subdue their prey in order to feed depending on the species, either using poison, strength or asphyixation by coiling. They come in all shapes and sizes too, and many have wonderful patterns on their body which they use to intimidate larger creatures. Snakes are almost entirely carnivorous, and will often keep themselves going off one big meal for days or even weeks at a time, talk about efficient...

Lizards

Extremely well recognized, a lizard is probably what most people think of when they think reptile. Four legged, with scaly bodies, long tails, stocky and barrel-shaped bodies and heads raised above themselves to more easily spot dangers or prey! Despite that, most are pretty small in size, with an obvious exception being the apex predator: the komodo dragon. Lizards are a very varied class of animal, with varying diets and using different tactics to capture prey, from sticky tongues to venom to sharp teeth, you can rarely know what to expect from them! And while something like a chameleon is timid and will hide using its ever changing scale colours, you'd better beware of the venemous gila monster's bite!

Crocodilia

Terrifying ambush predators known for their so called 'death roll', they manuever themselves through water with insane skill and can chase down prey at rapid speed... as long as they're not on land. While a croc running at you is pretty terrifying, they probably won't catch you in a long distance sprint! They're built like tanks too and have no trouble melting prey once they've been devoured, they are THE apex predator. While they are more than capable of tearing prey apart, lately I've noticed a strange behaviour where they skip the biting and go straight to the swallowing... I even sketched a crocodile doing this the other day! What could be causing this? Character Image

Dinosaurs

The true reptiles. Its a shame they don't exist anymore, we have to rely on fossils and imagination to bring them back to life. Much like mammals, you'd be surprised at the amount of variety dinosaurs had between each other. Some lived in the ocean, some took flight, others were gigantic and others were tiny, and no doubt that some preferred their own company while others sought companionship. Personally, my favourite has always been the pterodactyl, but that might just be because of my love for birds. I wonder what it would have been like to see one hunt...?

Monsters

You weren't even convinced most of these things existed, and yet the author writes about them as though they were lurking around every corner... you hope that this entire section is just fiction, but the more diagrams you see and more entries you see, the less convinced you are...

I don't even think whoever's reading this will believe I've seen these creatures before, but that doesn't really matter; I have, and my memories will live on through this book. Its my most cherished possession, after all. Just keep in mind, reader. While my descriptions may be entertaining and perhaps you think they'll help you an encounter, never believe you'll be prepared when you come face to face with the nightmares that lurk in the night.

Humanoids

Humans have always been terrified of the dark, and in the dark, they misunderstand what they see. All the stories of humanoids spotted at night like the Bigfoot or the Slenderman are stories people tell to try to explain what they saw, it helps ease the terror giving something a name... A good coping mechanism, but ultimately useless. When you come face to face with a werewolf or a yeti or a cyclops or... skinwalker, knowing what they are probably won't save you unless you are properly prepared! And believe me, there's way more out there than just what people have made stories about. There's a reason children are scared to look at the Thing under your Bed.

Mythical Monsters

Where did these myths come from? They had to be based on something, right? Well, dear reader, I'm glad to tell you mythical beasts absolutely do exist and they're as elusive as they sound! Manticores, griffins, dragons, sphinxes, krakens, Nessie, heck, you'd probably have an easier time finding beasts that didn't exist! Still, keep in mind that you probably won't enjoy getting close to one of these guys. Only true monster hunters have a chance of encountering them in such a way that they won't notice your presence... and believe me, you don't want them to notice you. They'll take all the steps necessary to ensure their own secrecy, being the intelligent creatures they are!

Giant insects

You're probably wondering why there isn't an insect section to the Feralnomicon yet. The answer is: screw you, I haven't got there yet! I'll write it after my safari. For now, this'll do to add to 'monsters', giant insects are revolting to look at and almost single-minded in their goal. What is that goal, you ask? Survival. And if you're a meal, they will stop at nothing to consume you. Think giant worms, spiders, snails... heck, even a moth with a mouth big enough would probably try to swallow you whole if it caught you. Just try not to think about these guys too much, surely they're just escaped specimens from a radiation lab anyway, right? RIGHT?!

Aliens

Yes, they exist, and no, I'm not telling you where I saw them. This section is a Work in Progress for now because there is simply no way to classify aliens by categories for the moment as there is simply not enough data to define them. Some are humanoid, others resemble beasts or insects, I saw one with tentacles for legs once too! Keep in mind, not all came here in a spaceship, some have found their way onto our planet by sheer random chance, either due to a technological malfunction or because they are simply capable of surviving in the harsh vacuum of space and decided they'd make Earth their home, either for nefarious purposes or otherwise...
