Terrance Bell (Terry) was once a human that was down on his luck. Terry's life has been nothing but mistakes and bad luck since he was a kid getting into all sorts of trouble and creating a mess of his home. His countless screwups caused even his own parents to find him to be a terror, handing him off to his aunt in the rural town of Fuarkhen.
Living in this town worked to Terry's disadvantage, as the whole place was full of questionable crooks and young hooligans that would use his lack of foresight to trick him into doing their dirty work, leaving him to take the blame when things got bad. His aunt didn't try to quell his behavior either, resulting in him getting involved with the wrong crowds often enough to be considered the leader of some of the larger groups. Still, while his heart was in the right place, his mind was always deviating from the right choices in life, finally resulting in his imprisonment in a holding cell. On the same night as his imprisonment, his aunt was hit by one of Terry's troublesome pranks, nearly killing her and leaving her unable to pay the fines for his crimes.
With no money to pay for his damages, Terry was put on a special list designed to deter would-be criminals while keeping the county jail from overflowing with hoodlums: The List of the Damned. The list identifies the criminal, their record number, and three major felonies they have been found guilty of. If the fines were paid, they were removed from the list and freed. If the criminal couldn't pay the fine within 14 days, the criminal would be sold into slavery to whomever the highest bidder was.
Being the "leader" of multiple local gangs in the area, Terry was unfortunately sent to the top of the list, making him out to be the toughest and meanest slave for sale. On the 14th day, Terry was sold almost immediately to a woman from a tribe of bulky women, using their slaves to breed, abuse, and labor for them while they hunted. Terry would never see his aunt again, as he was gagged and bagged before leaving Fuarkhen forever.
As a slave, Terry still managed to pull his weight, despite being tortured and handled like a dog. His body was covered in welts and bruises non-stop, but he was soon taken in under one woman who took pity on him. While she refused to say her name to him as a form of keeping him unattached to her as a mate, Terry was allowed to move freely from that point on, able to go fishing for the lady since it was something he was much better at than the local huntresses. He made his living off of fishing for food...until his fishing was spotted by a young jungle girl named Ikko. While he was just hoisting up a salmon out of the water, Ikko pulled out her book of apprentice magic, casting a transformation spell that caused him to fuse with the fish, turning him into a merman on land.
Ikko bagged up Terry and started to merrily walk along the beach, once again taking Terry from the place he called home. He wiggled in the bag as much as he could, but without any practice with his new merman body, he only floundered half-heartedly, leaving him defenseless and scared. Ikko then pulled Terry out of the bag to show to her adopted mother Reffy, who also happened to be a mermaid. Terry was taken in by the mermaid, learning how to use his new tailfin to swim forward. His swimming speed is fast enough to outrun Reffy, but due to a lack of foresight, Terry ended up slamming his head into a giant rock on his first lesson.
Now, Terry acts as the personal assistant and butler to Reffy, learning how to live as a merman while also learning magical spells from her as well. Terry ends up as a meal for Reffy more often than not, but has been known to become a meal for anyone assuming they can catch him out of water. He's easy to catch in water as well, but only with proper planning. An outright chase would be hard due to his immense speed, so using some crafty tricks in the water could disable him for easy capture.
