One day, years ago, the world changed suddenly and violently. The night sky disappeared, replaced with a false sky, a sky full of stars, each one representing a contractor. When a contractor dies, a star falls.... and when a contractor uses his or her power, their star flares all the brighter.
KF 573 is the designation assigned to Roland's star. A free agent, he works for a few people, rarely, when he needs the money, and he's rather picky about who he works with. An abnormal contractor in that he retains more of his human emotions and irrationality, this is reflected in his choice of jobs and whom he works with. He was one of the contractors who fought in Heaven's War, and at Hell's Gate some years later, as well. This, perhaps, may explain HOW he has become unusual, as many of the contractors at Hell's Gate were affected similarly.
Mind you, at the beginning, Roland was a typical contractor. Rational, self-serving, and amoral, he never had much cause to use his power. However, like many contractors, he was snatched up at a young age by the Syndicate, to be trained as a soldier. When the battle of Heaven's Gate was fought, he was away from the epicenter, of course, else he'd not be here now, but he was part of the same group as Amber and Bai. He disappeared like many of the others did, at the same time, as well... and since then he's kept to himself, only coming out of hiding on rare occasions, always, apparently, at the bidding of the Syndicate. At the same time, though, he had been contacted by Amber, and was in fairly regular contact with her, through various agents. When the Hell's Gate battle kicked off, he was one of the many distractions, fighting against the soldiers of the Syndicate. When the battle was finished, and the syndicate exposed, he disappeared again.
Now, he tends to work for private companies, rather than government agencies and the like. The pay can be almost as good, and it's certainly comfortable. As well, there's a certain amount of bloodlessness, in the normal course of things. He won't have to kill any innocents, which he objects to, and most of the time he won't even have to use his power at all. He's an anti-expert weapon, plain and simple. Contractors and other trained agents are the only ones he has to fight and inflict any harm on, and even then he often doesn't have to use his power or kill.
So what, pray tell, IS his power? Well. That's a good question, particularly since every power comes at a cost. His power lets him summon equipment of varying sorts to himself, anything from a pistol to a full, massive suit of armor. His power, however, is variable, allowing him to control how much he gets. Depending on how much he draws, the price of using his power, the cost he has to meet, increases as well. His remuneration is a simple one, but one he despises. He has to inflict pain on someone who does not deserve it, or more than one, every time he uses his power, and there is no escaping it. A contractor's remuneration is a compulsion, and must be fulfilled, or else the contractor goes insane and dies. This is a simple, inescapable fact. And, well, there IS a limit to his power, as well, both in how long he can use it and what he can do with it. Some things are beyond him, plain and simple.
Most of the time, though, there's no need whatsoever to use his power, so he, of course, doesn't. This, of course, means that there's no real way to distinguish him from a normal human, and there's nothing to mark him as something extraordinary there. He's just a normal guy, by appearance, which is kind of the point. Best not to stand out, in the end.
5'10, with short, dark brown hair and bright green eyes, he's best described as 'good-looking, but not extraordinary'. Clean-shaven without fail, barring extraordinary circumstances, he's typically clad in a simple, black business suit, with tie, and armed for bear. As a 'Security Consultant', that's practically a requirement. It's more of a formality than anything, really. In addition to his piece(a .357 magnum semiautomatic), he's got a large knife and a flash-bang grenade, because it's better to be safe and alive than sorry and injured(or, you know, DEAD).
Typically, he comes across as fairly cheerful and friendly, perhaps even slightly careless. He seems to bumble about unless something is happening, at which point that mask comes off in a hurry. He doesn't really have much to do on a regular basis aside from helping scientists test materials in the lab, as well as keep security up to date, which mostly entails him trying to break in on an irregular basis. He also provides the occasional blood sample to the scientists, who are trying to figure out how contractors work. It's an easy, boring job, all told, interspersed with occasional panic. So, in the end, perhaps nothing has changed at all...
