Survivor

"It's 'Kash,' with a 'k'."

Once upon a time, there was a girl named Jennifer Borges. She went to college for a couple semesters where she learned that there was no parking and bikes had their tires stolen, so she picked up skateboarding. She dropped out when the economy tanks and hopped from job to job, keeping none of them longer than 6 months. She enjoyed acid and latin jazz, she loved spicy food, especially spicy Asian food. She did a little video gaming, mostly with her nerdy roommates, played some Left 4 Dead and the sequel, Fallout 3 and Borderlands and stuff... and was forced to sit through a slurry of crappy zombie movies on Netflix.

But none of that matters now, nor does the reason, only the result. Maybe at some point in humanity's future, scientists will be able to discover the cause, be it biological, chemical, radiological, supernatural or hell, even extraterrestrial. All that matters now though, is survival. In a world... where the few left alive remember cheesy zombie flicks fondly simply because the undead were on the other side of the TV screen, life kinda sucks. Most of the population has become flesh-eating beasts that only vaguely resemble the human beings they once were. They are the new dominant species on earth, though they are called by many names, including: infected, possessed, the walking dead, crazies, zulus, monsters, deadheads, hemophages, ghouls, zombies, zeds, biters, vampires, assholes, cadaver vivens or the 'life impaired.' Take your pick just don't take too long choosing, there's probably a couple of them around the corner.

So now Jennifer no longer worries about when the money from her last job will run out and she'll have to start applying to places again. She doesn't even go by Jennifer anymore. Along with the rest of her old life, she left that behind. Now she goes by 'Kash.' If you ask nice enough she might tell you what it means, but probably not. Even though civilization as she knew it ended, she didn't much mourn its passing. Instead of dodging cars trying to hit her on her skateboard, she now dodges slow-moving shambler zombies. Debt collectors no longer stalk her but that's alright, she has the swift, cunning chaser zeds to deal with these days. Rather than worry about where her next month's rent will come from, she just stresses about her next meal. Regret and insomnia no longer keep her up at night but who needs those? There's paranoia and hallucinated noises to do that. Pretty much the same thing, right?

Well not entirely... because now she can kill people! Or rather, Kash kills people. Or even more accurately, Kash kills former people. Or would that be rekills? Well at any rate, she now gets to shoot human-shaped creatures or stab them or burn them or bash them over the head and no one gives a shit! Good for a little post-apocalyptic stress relief.
