Brynlee O'Conner is the youngest daughter of the prestigious Matthias and Gianna O’ Conner. The O’Conner family are known as the pinnacle of Pokémon Trainers within Kalos. Every single child has been nothing short of an ace with a heavy expectation of success. Brynlee has four older siblings: Arrabella, Gideon, Brody, and Xavier. All of which are known throughout the world. Arrabella is the current champion of Unova. While the twins, Gideon and Brody are the currently undefeated Frontier Brains of Hoenn. Xavier is the final member of the Elite Four in Kalos. And as such, the focus came to Brynlee. And she was not ready to accept such responsibility. It was well known that she did not do well under pressure.

Unable to handle both the stress of having all eyes on her and risking disappointing her parents, Brynlee made a decision—get away from it all. Brynlee gathered up her beloved Deino in the dead of night and caught the boat to wherever it was going to take her. She found herself in the islandic paradise known as Alola. In this strange new place, Brynlee sought to make a name for herself here. Alas, it wasn't meant to be...

The island challenge was something she hadn't prepared for. Hala's Grand Trial is what broke Brynlee yet again—with so many people standing around and watching her all the while the deafening pressure of expectation caused her to collapse on stage. Breaking down in tears, Brynlee couldn't even give one order to her Deino before she recalled him and fled the scene where she collapsed outside of Route 2 after giving out of energy. She was found by a Team Skull Grunt who spied her discarded island challenge amulet. Offering her a place among losers, Brynlee accepted his offer and found herself being escorted to Po Town by the "thugs" known as Team Skull.

Upon meeting Guzma and seeing how every one else in Po Town were losers or outcasts who also failed the island challenge, she felt a sense of security for the first time in a long time. And from then on, Brynlee was accepted into the group and made an offiical member of Team Skull.
