Shirara

It's not easy, living in a world where a simple shift of common belief can eliminate you, and your species. In a world where Faith is needed for your people to still exist, if they stop believing in you because of science, or for any other reason.

Unfortunately for the Yamabiko, people don't believe that they're the source of echos anymore. As a race, they're in serious danger, with their numbers plummeting on a yearly basis. A natural extinction seems likely, unless things change.

Of course, a simple lack of belief wasn't all there was to it. It didn't help, mind you, but the main downfall of the Yamabiko has been that people don't yell at the mountains where they live, anymore. The Yamabiko need the sounds of living things, especially humans, to survive. Mountains are naturally noisy places, of course, as far as wildlife goes, and that's keeping the race on a lifeline, but they simply cannot support the same population they once had.

Of course, not every Yamabiko has stayed on the mountains, hoping for the best. A few of them have made their way down to where people live, taking up residence among the humans and youkai of Gensokyo, trying to find a new way to survive.

Which brings us to Shirara. As you may have inferred, she is, of course, a Yamabiko, and one of those who has left the mountains, encountering a bit of culture shock along the way! Things are worlds different in the villages outside the mountains, and her first encounter with modern technology was... well. Somewhat shaming. Damned tengu! Pantyshots are no fun!

*cough* Anyway. Since then, she's adjusted fairly well, briefly having a job helping with things around the village, before setting off to do her own thing. No one's quite sure how she supports herself, though, as she seems... well, rather like Kogasa. She doesn't really work, per se, instead mostly seeming to try to startle people! Unlike Kogasa, though, she's rather more effective, as long as things go well.

Of course, Kogasa doesn't have her disadvantage, either. See.... there's a compulsion Yamabiko have to repeat things they hear. Sometimes just once, sometimes for a while, but it can be... awkward. VERY awkward. Nevermind what happens when she sneaks up behind someone and they sneeze, or make some other noise, imagine what happens when she hears, say, someone screaming lewd insults at someone! It can make for a heck of a mess, especially since, above all else, Yamabiko are LOUD.

Still, so far she's managing well enough.

Will finish later
