Sakuyo's dream was always to be a Black Mage. She loved they way the were able to control the elements, and it always amazed her with what they could do with it. But, despite being attuned to the Aether like most of the other people in Eorzea, she never had that much affinity for magic. But despite that, the guild in Ul'Dah took her in to train her. Even if she wasn't too good with magic, they knew that she could at least be trained. Sakuyo was very excited to hear this, and she was eager to begin her training.

Training, however, didn't exactly go well. She tended to mess up on spells a lot. She'd either lose concentration and they'd fizzle out, or they'd backfire and explode in her face. She seemed almost untrainable, but even then, she wouldn't give up. No matter how many times she was hit by her own fire spell, she wouldn't give up her dream.

That willpower let her get through. She was able to keep concentration much better, and spells weren't misfiring as much as they used to. She was definitely improving. But, that didn't mean she still doesn't have a lot of training. She still only knows the basic few spells, and even then they may not go in the direction she'd really expect. She still has a lot of training ahead of her. A teacher could be useful...
