What is an 'oni'?
Oni are creatures from Japanese folklore, variously translated as demons, devils, ogres or trolls. They are popular characters in Japanese art, literature and theatre.
Depictions of oni vary widely but usually portray them as gigantic creatures with sharp claws, wild hair, and two long horns growing from their heads. They are humanoid for the most part, but occasionally, they are shown with unnatural features such as odd numbers of eyes or extra fingers and toes.Their skin may be any number of colors, but red and blue are particularly common.
They are often depicted wearing tiger-skin loincloths and carrying iron clubs, called kanabÅ. This image leads to the expression "oni with an iron club", that is, to be invincible or undefeatable. It can also be used in the sense of "strong beyond strong", or having one's natural quality enhanced or supplemented by the use of some tool.
Oni, quite often are portrayed in popular culture in one of two ways, Either Red oni or Blue oni.
Red Oni are the stronger, brasher, drunker, rowdier, crass, boorish, laid back types....Yes, all of those things at once. They are are certainly the ogrish type, though are far from stupid. They just have a passion for living, it's the only way to put it. and they live in excess. Fucking, fighting, eating, sleeping, headbutting, partying. Red Oni do all these things and more, and even though they may seem horribly destructive, if you befriend a Red Oni, they are your friend for life. They never forget a friendship and never betray a friend, unless they are betrayed first.
Blue oni are the exact opposite (till drunk). They are completely reserved, calm, cool and collected. They never pick fights and never, ever cause any more trouble in their lives then they need to. Though, because of this, they are seen as very cold, harsh beings. They are also almost impossible to become friends with, never trusting anyone but themselves. Though they still have the oni strength and build, they never let themselves go too far out on a limb....except if they are drunk.
Get a Blue Oni drunk, and they make the Red Oni look reserved.
Backstory
It is said, for each red oni there is a blue oni equivelent.
Rieko calls those people moronic, though she does seem to believe that fact the more and more she runs into her 'sister'
Riniko.
It is often because of the similarities of their story. In her village, she was one of the strongest oni, and though the reserved blue oni are not ones for contest and shows of power that their more rough and tumble counterparts are known for, there is one situation where dueling and contest is nessicary.
Marriage.
It was a brisk winter morning when the Chief of the Oni Village came into her home and told her that, barring any unknown proposals of marriage before that time, that she was to be married to the Chief's son in the next week.
Rieko politely declined, stating that her son was unworthy of Rieko to be her husband. The Chief said otherwise...and Rieko simply grabbed her Kusari-gama, finished her glass of tea, stood up, and said. "Then we meet in the circle."
Blue oni do not postulate or set up fanciful tests of mettle in terms of marriage as well, as there is simply little time for them to be brash. The dueling circle is a simple concept. Any weapon or skill may be used, and the two must meet inside the ten foot circle, show these weapons and walk to either end.
Upon declaration from the village elder, the first to step out of the circle, be -thrown- from the circle, or to admit defeat would be declared the loser.
The Chief's son...a blue oni who could have very well been red with the way he puffed his chest up and wielded his kanabo, would be standing there, kanabo and shield at the ready. Rieko calmly standing opposite of him, nearly half his size and holding her Kusari-gama as if it might cut her.
The duel would start....and summarily end within moments. As soon as the Village elder called the match to a start, the Kusari-gama was loosed with a powerful throw, it wildly wrapping around the Man's neck, choking him and imbedding into his back. Rieko would give it a swift yank and he would quickly lose his air supply, second later falling backward out of the circle.
Needless to say...she won...but quickly had to leave the village. He may not have been dead...but she knew this would not end anytime soon. The village, of course, begged her to stay, as she was the strongest of them, but she declined.
'My soul mate....lives elsewhere.'
Abilities
Oni: Seriously, this is an ability unto itself. She has skin stronger then most leather armor, and is strong enough to lift boulders three times her size over her head, especially if she's drunk. She's also got an iron stomach and a titanium liver.
Conflagration: Most oni wont bother with the ancient skills anymore, putting more emphasis on their bodies and just being tough as nails. Rieko, at a young age, got a hold of some of the old oni scrolls and actually put forth the effort to learn a trick or two. This is one of them, being the ability to blow flames from her mouth and swing out fists covered in flame. She can even, with a drink of sake in her mouth, fire out a huge ball of blue flame that will consume anything in its way that is flammable.
Kusarigama: Most Oni use Kanabo...but some of the skinier oni use what is called an Oni's chain or a Kusari-gama. A weapon used mostly by human farmers at first, the oni perfected the weapon in battle. It consists of a hooked hand sickle like blade, with a long chain made out of strong heavy metal, in Riniko's case it is Titanium. Swinging the chain around and sending it flying, a master at the weapon can quickly wrap someone up and imbed the weapon into their opponent's skull.
