Rations

Some dragons are terrifying beasts that get to rule over whole kingdoms and lunch on fresh virgin. Some aren't. One lineage of captive dragons, bred for submissiveness and small size, dwindled until they were nearly vermin. Defenseless and unable to fend for themselves in the wild, they're raised for meat, their tender flesh a delicacy to the most discriminating markets... butchered, or alive and squirming. Princesses and nobles in that land have an entire vocabulary for the way the little dragons flop and tumble in their mouths, special phrases for how they struggle on the way in.

Rations here is such a dragon. He learned his name from hearing himself being described as that over and over while he grew up in a tiny cage, destined to be nothing more than a special treat set on the table of the noblewoman who bought his egg. The day before his cooking, he was set free by an incident involving a clumsy slave and a fortuitously placed torch, and bolted out despite the poor chances of survival out in the big, wide world. Now the smooth-scaled li'l greenie is left wandering around in hopes of a warm place to sleep. All too often, that warm place ends up being inside someone else, and when people offer him food it's only to fatten him up for their own appetites... but he's an eternal optimist. After all, he's never learned to be anything but polite and friendly to those around him, even if they're pouring sauce on his tender hide.
