Halloween is one of those holidays. You know... the ones that inevitably become warped over time. They start off as one thing, but years of different celebrations, as well as marketing, warp them into something completely different? Actually, hold on... they're all like that, aren't they?
Nevertheless, Halloween is one of the fun ones. Did you know, it was originally Samhain? A Celtic festival celebrating the end of the harvest season. They thought that on October 31st, the boundary between living and dead became blurred, allowing the dead to cause issues in the living world.
The name Halloween comes from All-hallow-even... referring to the eve of All Hallow's Day, which is also known as All Saint's Day.
So how in the hell did it turn into what it is now, with pumpkins and costumes and candy and decorations?
Well, Nishiki doesn't know, but she's sure a lot cheerier now than she was a few hundred years ago when the whole thing started up.
Nishiki IS Halloween. She's the demon that represents it, rather. She was born along with the holiday, and has matured... well, sort of... along with the holiday. She was quite the depressing little terror back in the day, killing off crops and being a nuisance. But now that it's a more upbeat and happy holiday, she's changed for the better herself! Though, she embodies the 'whole' holiday, mind you. There's mischief there, too.
Oh, and for the curious, the name Nishiki came about later, during her travels... she went by Eve, before then (get it? All Hallow's -Eve-, and all~).
She does get bored, though. She's not very content with the once-per-year deal, and has delusions of grandeur in which an eternal Halloween covers the world (or at least one city... give her one measly city!). Somewhat like good ol' Halloween Town, from that movie everyone likes. She's working towards her goal bit by bit, however... attempting to convert 'minions' to her cause.
So, what IS Nishiki? Well, she's a demon. Of course. She's more canid than anything else, it seems... the little fluffy wagging tail and the broad ears make her stand out a bit, as does her outfit. She's not very big... four foot six, maximum, without her hat. Her 'traditional raiments', as she calls them, consist of a magically-imbued witch costume and an equally magically-imbued pumpkin to hold candy. She's a cute little darling, though don't mistake cute for harmless... she's a demon, and one that represents an entire HOLIDAY, at that. She can warp reality around herself, even when it's not her night. This is why you -want- to hang out with her. She has the -best- parties.
A typical night with Nishiki will be dark, windy, and cold. Clouds will cover the moon sparsely. Wolves will howl, leaves will blow. Shadows will dance at the edges of your vision. Everyone will have an awesome costume, and you'll always get YOUR pick of the candy, not the CRAPPY stuff. Or dental floss. Or razorblades.
Nishiki's powers mostly extend to Halloween-related mischief, mostly conjuring and small tricks. She can summon up a ghostly hand to egg someone's house or TP their trees, or go to a house in need and coat it with fake spiderwebs (or real ones... depending) and dancing plastic skeletons. She knows that the holiday she represents has become a little cheesy, but that's -why- she has so much fun with it. She tries to be creepy and weird, but she really only enjoys it when people believe her.
Oh, I'm sorry! Back to the topic at hand. Nishiki would love an Eternal Halloween, and is working towards that goal as we speak. The petite little demongirl can do a lot of it on her own... random pranks and decorating, the conversion of the reality of the landscape, et cetera... but what's the point if no one is enjoying any of it? Some people will hop right in, of course... many LOVE Halloween... but she has ways of 'converting' nonbelievers.
Living blobs of spiderwebbing. Giant, man-eating pumpkins with tongues the size of small cars. Globs of melted marshmallow and chocolate and caramel. Sticky, gooey gum-monsters. Yes, you're reading correctly. She uses the candy and decor of her own holiday as the means to an end, snaring and gobbling people right up with the sweets and trappings of Halloween!
That's not all she can do, of course. Her tail can swell to ludicrous proportions and wrap someone up tight, slurping them into its furry bulk. Her soft hair is equally as dangerous, tangling them up and pulling them into its depths. She's flat-chested, so that path is out, but centuries of eating has made her stretchy enough to slurp someone down with nary a care... and they won't even make a bulge. She also has a habit of stuffing people into her hat. What's in her hat? It's a secret...
It's rumored that Nishiki might have a 'lieutenant', so to speak... but it's unknown who that might be...
On actual full moon nights, Nishiki shifts back to her
full demon form... she prefers to be called Eve during this time, and has unrestricted access to every demonic ability she knows, making her even more fun. And dangerous... but mainly fun. Any other time, it requires supreme concentration to make the change. She looks different, though... not at all like Nishiki. It is another person, perhaps? A demon within a demon? Or is it just amazing costuming on the part of the spirit of Halloween?
