For those who don't know, selkies are mythical beings capable of becoming seals when in water, so long as they have their seal skin with them. If a selkie’s seal skin is stolen, the selkie is forced to obey the person who possesses it and do whatever they say. Selkies are known to be unbelievably beautiful or handsome, and having wonderful singing voices. Some legends say they can even use their voice to control water, and lure people towards them, much like a siren.

Nerrom is a selkie, and remains such to this day. This, however, is something she views as a curse rather than a blessing. Being a selkie may give her abilities such as an alluring voice, the ability to control water through singing, and the power to become a seal. However, it also comes with a flaw that ruined her life, that being she must listen to anyone who has her seal skin.

When Nerrom was young, she hid her seal skin beneath the sand on a beach before running off, wanting to play with some of the human children in a nearby village. When she returned to it later that evening though, she found a woman holding her skin, smiling as she waited for her to return. Immediately she began to speak, giving Nerrom order after order, stripping her of the ability to attack her, insult her, or disobey her under any circumstances. Petrified, Nerrom could only do as the woman, who she would later refer to as Mistress Sarah, said. Soon the selkie was brought to Sarah’s home where she became her slave, working day after day. Nerrom often went looking for her seal skin late in the evening, trying to figure out where it had been hidden. But alas, it was hidden too well. Days turned into weeks, weeks turned into months, and months turned into years. Nerrom spent eleven years working as Sarah’s slave, silently screaming as she was forced to preform one demeaning task after another. Cook, clean, maintain the lawn, entertain, and even pleasure her mistress when she grew older. Stripped of her pride and freedom, Nerrom soon lost hope, resigning herself to her new life.

That is, until a hurricane struck the town. The tempest reeked havoc upon the village, countless houses being destroyed in the process, one of which being Sarah’s. In the chaos the selkie fled, managing to survive the horrible storm through sheer luck. Days later she returned to the house which had been reduced to rubble, and picked through the debree, not daring to hope that she’d find what she was looking for. Thankfully though, she did. There, along with the dead body of the one she had been forced to serve for the past eleven years, was her seal skin. Fleeing the town, Nerrom set out to make a new life for herself, and never looked back.

During her travels, Nerrom located a parka and sewed her seal skin into the lining, ensuring that it would never be found. She now wears that parka wherever she goes, never letting anyone touch it. Some might even call her paranoid, and they’d be right. Nerrom has serious trust issues, and sees everyone as a potential enemy, someone who might strike and attempt to take away the freedom she had longed for for over a decade. Because of this, the selkie isn’t a rude person by any means, but she’s shy and distrustful. A loner. She now wanders from place to place, doing her best to hide her identity as a selkie from everyone around her. She occasionally returns to the sea, but not very often. After all, the sea is a dangerous place for seals.
