Background
The Menagerie
There once was a tower. This in itself might not be very impressive, but this particular tower was home to a collector of sorts, a mage who made a practice of collecting strange and interesting creatures he encountered and subdued, bringing them to the tower and locking them away. The master of the tower would often be absent, working on some project or another or perhaps pursuing yet another to add to his collection, and thus the tower was left in the capable hands of a woman simply known as The Caretaker. The cycle would generally consist of the Master coming to the tower, sometimes with a new addition, staying a week or two to... mingle with his collection, and then leaving for months at a time.

Three years ago, the cycle was broken. All at once, it was as if every creature in the tower rebelled at once, something so uncanny that the uninitiated would have thought that it was a conspiracy or that it had otherwise been planned. While the Master was gone, something had happened, and all of the magical safeguards he had in place failed simultaneously. When the ashes were settled, the doors were breached, several of the occupants of the tower were dead, the Caretaker was nowhere to be found, and every piece of the Master's collection fled into the darkness. Slowly, the few humanoids that had remained journeyed elsewhere, sometimes alone, sometimes in small groups. Once empty, the tower collapsed, and none who lived there have ever returned to the ruins.
