Motina
A mellow Lamia in her late 20's.
“You may have heard the tales and folklore, but let me assure you that it’s all deceiving.”
Rumor has it that deep within the forest, there lies a rundown shack, inhabited by a creature unlike any you've ever seen. Its defying form, human, yet with a twisting and slender body, roams the withered depths of the forest in search of its next victim. If you value your life, it best be avoided. These tales and rumors are shared and told by travelers hiking from neighboring hamlets, and they all speak of a similar terror; some even claim they had briefly encountered the creature, and barely escaped with their lives. For a long time, these tales and travelers have been rendered superstitious; ones that only passerby’s and the weak of mind would believe. Motina, as she’s been named, is known to the locals as a guardian of the deep forest. She lives in a small, homey cottage, underneath a clearing in the canopy above, along with her very own vegetable farm is right outside her home. It is much like a sanctuary for those whose paths are deemed lost, and a pit stop and motel for those who are in need of rest. She is very gentle of nature, and enjoys the company of visitors and passerby’s who aren't afraid of the folklore that surrounds the forest; especially children.
However, it wasn't always like this. Motina had been an outcast for many years before anyone had dared to approach her on their own. It wasn't until a small child got lost in the forest while playing with her friends that a hamlet close to her home became acquainted with her kind. Her parents had searched far and wide for their young one all night, but came up empty. Motina had found the child, freezing and lost on a path leading her astray, and had taken her into her home. She cared for the child, even though it was not of her kind, and kept her safe from the dangers the forest posed at night. The very next morning Motina led the child back to the care of her parents, letting her ride her tail whenever she grew weary, and remained unnoticed as the child ran back to her hamlet in the distance. It was nothing short of a miracle. To think that a small, lost child had survived the night, with a slender, twisted creature roaming the woods, said to have claimed the lives of many. They urged the child to tell them what had happened, but laughed once she had told them the truth. As time passed, more children were convinced of the girl’s story. Many would find their way over to, and visit, Motina, and would eventually give her a nickname of their own as her true name was hard to pronounce. Motina loves children, and appreciated their innocent attitudes towards her. However acquainted with Motina the children came to be, and however harmless they made her out to be, their parents were no less doubtful. Rumors never surfaced without some form of belief and integrity behind them. Nevertheless, their parents would slowly come to terms with her existence as time progressed, seeing no harm being done to their children playing in the woods, and would eventually come to show gratitude toward Motina for watching over them. Motina now lives contently in her cottage, spending most of her days tending to her garden and reading novels on her front porch, in hopes that a new visitor will curiously stop by her home.
------ Bio ------
Motina is the eldest of her siblings, and because of this she was partially responsible for her two younger brothers. She fed and raised the two of them when their parents weren’t around, making sure they followed in their footsteps by wearing clean clothes and looking proper every day. They were strict about this; it was a matter of principle, and although they were different from humans in some ways, their rules and etiquette still applied to them. Nevertheless, they would still complain about it in the beginning, as was expected. Motina and her family lived in an underground dirt cave, secluded from the world above, and although it wasn't much it was more than enough for them. Motina had a lonely childhood because of this, before her siblings came along, and ended up turning to the only playmates she could think of; humans. Motina became very fond of the humans as time passed; unfortunately, these relations were and strictly forbidden, and she was frequently scolded by her parents for it. However, once her siblings were born, all of her time was devoted to giving them, and herself, the true childhood she had longed for. She had an unquenchable love for her brothers, spending every day playing with them, caring for them and scolding them whenever they misbehaved. This went on for years, until her brothers came of age. When they did, Motina decided it was time for her to find a place to call her own, closer to the humans that she had adored spending her time with.
