In eastern culture, it is believed that tools abandoned for long time are to be turned into self consciousness beings.
Here Tatara Kogasa has a long sad history as an abandoned paper umbrella.
Made by human, used by some human girl. But as the umbrella was no more needed , it was thrown away , was damaged , but somehow maintained its form for hundred years.
And finally it gained self awareness and walks in human shape.
