I was dreaming.
She does that a lot, little Melia. She's been doing a lot of dreaming her whole life. Every night, incredibly vivid dreams, and very few nightmares. She's not really remembered anything, though, that happened before she founds, other than a Bad Dream. This is probably a mercy.
Regardless! Here we have a rather adorable little elf girl, age unknown. She looks t be perhaps 10, at the oldest, though with her heritage it's impossible to say. She could be as old as thirty! Not that it matters, really. See, she's in a little bit of a pickle.
She's in debt. Oh, sure, who would do it to a little girl like that, huh? Well, there are unscrupulous bastards out there and they sank their claws into her good. See... she racked up a bit of a bill, during her hospital stay, and she was charged for quite a few other things, on the assumption that her parents would pay for it all. Thing IS, she has no parents. So, the debt settles squarely on her shoulders(due to aforementioned bastards being unscrupulous) and she has to work it off SOMEHOW.
So... she's a maid. She racked up MORE debt by being trained to be a maid, but now she IS a maid for hire(at her 'employer's' discretion). She makes very little money for herself. All food and lodging expenses come out of her pay, while she works as hard as she can, never seeing more than 20 dollars a week. A pittance, really. A hired servant on paper, almost a slave in practice, her primary escape is dreams... though they have been stranger and stranger of late. Dreams of her employers, over the years, doing... all manner of things to her. Some wonderful, some terrifying, all of them deeply intimate, leaving her either blushing or screaming when she wakes in the morning, untouched by her dreams, or so things would seem. She just hopes, now, that she'll be able to pay off what she owes, or find a nice family to take her in... and she dreams.
