Mayu

I'm still working on it, alright?

The first thing one will notice about young Mayu, is her strength in illness. Her cool, determined gaze that shows when she is performing a company task.

But wait, what task could require so much of a child?

Mayu is a third-generation Recombinant human. But what is a Recombinant?

Recombinants appeared in labs once Human gene testing was allowed during the year 2089. Most were built solely for one purpose or another, nothing really advanced. The fastest to maturity were the ones branded with nonhuman genes. Several at once were available, Dogs for security, equines, or centaurs for power, owls for.... secrecy and knowledge. Harpies, but without the ego. Cat-people of varied appearance ranging from full-body changes to subtle hints. This was one of the most versatile, to the point of acting either as a sex-slave to the point of being a living ambulance. A good example would be Pink_Nekomata, a cat built for revenge as a seventh-gen unit, after her creators failed to murder her.

By the time Mayu was coherent, generation 5 had come out of the labs. Her body was purpose-built for one thing. Time travel, something that was no laughing matter. Companies were grasping at the subject. One in particular, the one that 'mothered' Mayu. Claimed it's facility had exploded with no success. Others were barely even getting the math right. Truth was, Cherious inc. did it. And did it repeatedly.

Time travel on 'normal' humans and base recombinants isn't ever fun. Both departure and arrival warrant couts of nausea from the traveler, atop of brain damage, organ failure, and the odd time when a subject had burst into flames.

Mayu was built of sterner stuff. Part of a base-success group of 25 identical girls, she had limbs of iron and dim eyes, efficient to the core. Every point of her body was mathematically acute, and she even had an expiration date, as everyone 'false' did. Her life depended on an herb most prominent in a point of time, to extend her life cycle from one or two months, to years. So, to her surprise, she liked being the 'company lapdog', traveling back in time, coming back with a blood sample and a set of seeds. Never a scratch. By the first year's end, three quarters of the original 25 were dead, a quarter by not getting their antipoison, and the other half for just not coming back.

Truth was, some stayed in the past. Some were killed, their bones discovered in some random graveyards and valleys throughout the world. While others died of old age, having raised full families in some pre-modern age. Which points out something. If one wishes to remain in the past, all they need to do is severely injure themselves, or get pregnant. The former usually results in death. Both methods prevent the company scanners from porting them back, as too much mass is altered to return.

((Wip, pardon the dust.))
