Backstory
"Freshwater mermaid for sale. Price on request. Needs special diet and large enclosure to live properly, and must be ready prior to purchase."
One would think living in the big city, all the lights, the glitz, the glamour would be the greatest thing since sliced bread to a Monster girl. Normally, of course, it was...but for some. Well, Life kind of sucked.
Slime girls are a great example. They are in constant need of moisture and protean to survive, and the city isn't exactly the greatest source of either, without causing an incident anyway. That, and Slime girls tend to -not- be the sharpest tools in the shed, so needless to say they tended to stay near the beaches these days.
Centaurs equally have it bad in the larger cities. It's not due to a lack of food, though, but simply the ground itself. Hooves do not do so well on pavement over long periods of time. That, and a lot of the buildings, though they are Lamia friendly, are -not- centaur or any taur friendly just yet.
That brings us to our last group of beings with issues living in the city. The Merfolk. And that also brings us to the young girl sighing, staring out into the distance of the city with the bored expression. No doubt many a person had asked 'Why is she in that tank?' 'Why is she letting herself be sold?' 'Why doesn't she just leave.'
The simple truth is she -can't-.
Merfolk, by nature, are amphibious, but only barely so. Most merfolk can last about an hour outside of water before they start choking on the air, as their lungs are literally not designed to handle -just- air. Where's the closest source of water? 2 hours away...and that's salt water on top of the fact, something she couldn't be in if she wanted to be....
Sure...it looked a little bad at first, the cute girl sitting in the huge storefront window-sized tank...that -was- the storefront window for that matter, sitting there and smiling and waving to people every so often in an attempt to come in. It looked bad, as though she had no choice in her life, as if she was simply being used for her unique situation.
Shouldn't someone do something about this?
Malila thought this constantly as she watched people walk by, idly staring at the 'price on request' sign sitting above her with a sudden sigh. Being a monster, even only half, was hell in this world. Not that she would be upset if someone did buy her to be in a home or an aquarium of some form. She'd be more then happy to at least have someone to talk to...or at least a beautiful new place to swim around and enjoy some new sights.
Of course, if someone let her out inside a lake...she'd probably try to marry them on the spot! She always did want to be 'wild' to some degree, like what she imagined her mother and ancestors were.
...it would at least be better then trying to hawk people in the store for her daily meals.
Personality
In the end, Mali is a sweet girl. Sure, she has been trapped in the small tank with nothing but the occasional customer and the rather...mean store owner to talk to. Her 'owner' was not content with the fact that she was -still- there, having somehow got her into the city when she was nothing but a child. Malila doesn't remember those days, except for a single memory involving this very tank being rapidly moved through the city.
Still, she is happy to talk to people when they come inside the store, not that the owner lets people talk to her all that much. the glass is soundproof, so most people would have to go inside. As for people walking by, she can talk to them, and smiles sweetly, occasionally leaning into the glass and pressing her hands cutely to it, to see if anyone might do the same. In truth, she wished she could get some sort of physical contact as well.
Get her out of the tank and somewhere you can interact with her? she'll hug you...hell, she'll probably push you down and lay on top of you, deliberately nuzzling in, just for the chance to feel someone else!
Her favorite food is perch, ate whole of course. She adores all kinds of fresh water fish, but perch, especially cooked perch makes her the happiest.
