Mai hadn't always been here. She wasn't always trapped in this realm and revered as a powerful deity. Before she was summoned, she was one of the weakest in yomi-- the Yokai afterlife.

She's fairly certain that the humans that summoned her weren't really meaning to; it was pure chance that she was taken from her world and into theirs and that she was the one to come through and not some other youkai spirit.. She often muses that it was fortunate for her that this happened; otherwise she probably wouldn't have lasted much longer in Yomi.

She was summoned as a means to bless the crops of the village's people. In return, the village would offer her a sacrifice once a month. The person being offered up was normally a mature human male, though there was sometimes some variation.

They didn't normally offer up one of their own people, instead opting to use a slave from the slave trade, a wayward traveller, or just kidnap someone from another village. The person in question would be treated like royalty for the week leading up to her sacrifice. She would be forced to fast; her system had to be completely empty before taking a sacrifice for the ritual to work properly.

By the time her sacrifice was brought to her, she was ravenous. They would spend up to three days together, depending on when the sacrifice was delivered. She would offer food to the individual, opting to attempt to make them as comfortable as possible up until it was time for them to be given to her.

At first, she eagerly did her job. She was happy to be free of the pain and torment that was her life before. She even enjoyed being seen as powerful and being able to exert her power over the pathetic beings that were the humans; enjoyed having them worship her. But as the centuries went on, they did less and less for her. They found that it wasn't required for them to do exactly as she said, as the binding placed on her would not allow her to leave, and if they really were cross with her, they could just starve her until she was left begging for some form of offering to sustain herself.

She was reduced to a tool. They did still offer her sacrifices, but she was often starved for far longer between each one, as it became troublesome to attempt to find new offerings for her. She could eat the human's food, but it was like giving a starving man nothing but water.

Eventually, she was left to find her own sacrifices, but she would always have to return to the village in which she was originally bound, despite the fact that people had all migrated away from the region.

She would have stopped feeding all together, but in order to stay in this realm, she had to hunt. She certainly doesn't want to go back to her home world, for fear of retribution for passing over when she shouldn't have.

Occasionally, though, she would feel too guilty about ending a human's life and would, in turn, release them. While she had once little empathy and concern for the lives of mortals, being so often on the verge of death has softened her heart to them.

Trivia:
1. The fluff around her neck is actually attached to her! It's part of her! It is flesh! If you cut it, it will bleed, etc.

2. 'Deities' summoned in this universe are yokai pulled from another plane of existance-- from a world of all yokai. A portal randomly opens up in their world and whoever is the first one to clear it gets to go through. If, in a very rare occurance, two clear at the same time, they are either forced into the same body (if the summoners have a specific shape in mind for their deity) or they are both given separate bodies that are forever linked with one another. Meaning, if one dies, then they will both die. If one becomes injured, the other suffers the same injury.

OOC Notes:
I'm willing to play Mai at any juncture of this era, be it when the villagers were very excited to please her, or later down the line. That's up to you, if you have a preference! :>

I'm also open for RP that isn't vore-centred. I love romance/slice of life RPs.
