Lun Gong, the Avaricious: No one in town knew how long that old temple had been up the hill. Depending on who you'd ask they'd either dismiss with an 'it's always been there', or insist it just appeared one day. All together, the community could never reach a consesnsus through their hushed gossip. Of course, they'd still go about their days and nights as normal. They'd ignore the looming shadow until inevitably, the town expanded into it. At the dedication ceremony for this new portion of concrete, there was a dreadful air of misfortune. Valuables would go missing, most people were indiscernably tense, and the whole celebration concluded in some freak accident. In one night the "new part of town" became "that part of town". That part of town; where you try not to pass through past sundown. That part of town; people from there aren't quite right. The part of town where people go missing sometimes, as if they'd been spirited away. When the sun is swallowed by night, and the moon scarcely shines through a dark layer of wispy clouds. When a heavy silence descends, flattening all sound save for a beating heart and exhausted, hysterical breathing. When the rumbling behind steadily builds into a roar, drowning out a muffled shrill of a scream. Most anyone knows to avoid that part of town; and everyone knows not to enter that old temple. |
