Adventurer’s Codex Entry: Lamia

A lamia is sentient half human type of monster. The theory is that they were created or the result of a curse in ancient times, but with the ability to reproduce have since spread throughout the realms and continents. With the exception of freezing, inhospitable climates they can be found everywhere in the world.

Contrary to rumours lamia are warm blooded, and do not hibernate, however they seem to be prefer to stay and spent the cold months in one place, trying to avoid travel or leaving their abode.

Lamia can broadly be categorized in two groups, tribal and feral.

Tribal lamia come in many varieties, there are nomadic tribes that roam from place to place between their hunts. The clans, who claim territory and govern it in any number of ways, some of them harmless and open to trade, others xenophobic and isolationist where with other sentient beings kept as ‘cattle.

In short, the tribal lamia live in groups organized in familiar ways like most civilized people do.

The second group are the feral lamia, these will more commonly end up with an Adventurer’s Guild Bounty on their heads. Unlike the tribal variant these are solitary creatures, they are typically much stronger and larger than their more civilized counterparts. Many even lack the ability to speak the common tongue and behave more like wild animals than a sentient creature.

hey are fiercely territorial and won’t tolerate other predators in their hunting grounds, which can span many miles. They tolerate settlements within their sphere of influence much in the same way a predator tolerates a herd of prey and they usually stick to devouring only those that stray from that herd. If they are provoked or attacked, they will either go on a rampage or relocate to a different territory if the perceived odds aren’t in their favour. When feral lamia encounter one another, one will usually cannibalise the other. Feral lamia are usually female as males are traditionally weaker and consumed after the mating process. Once the young are born, they are nursed by their mother until they are strong enough to prey on smaller creatures and then abandoned to their fate. Only the strong and clever survive and more often than not a feral lamia that warrants a price on its head is both.

It is advised never to take on a feral lamia without a group of seasoned adventurers, their hypnotic gaze is said to overcome even the strongest of wills, so a multi-pronged attack is advised. Armor can often be a detriment in combat with a feral lamia since their strong tails can easily bend it out of shape and immobilize anyone wearing heavy plate. Their scales are tough to pierce and they have varying levels of resistance to magiks. The best approach is often to threaten a lamia with superior numbers to either kill it or drive it from their territory.

Kishori:

Kishori is, in many ways a very good example for one of the feral lamia. She doesn’t remember who her mothers name and has only a vague memory of what she looked like – dark hair and a scale pattern similar to her own. Left to fend for herself before she could even devour anything larger than a rabbit. Acting mostly on instinct, the lamia survived, sometimes by the skin of her teeth, when attacked by a pack of wolves when she was about 10 years old she barely escaped. The only reason she didn’t suffer permanent scarring is thanks to moulding and her body’s strong ability to regenerate. To this day she holds a bit of a grudge against wolves and will not tolerate them in her territory. Being too young to really claim a territory for herself because of other more prolific predators in the area, the young lamia learned a lot about moving stealthily in the shadows. She also observed rival predators, monster girls and animals alike to learn their strengths and weaknesses. Not only did she learn about them, she tried to come up with ideas of how to counter them and come out on top<

As she grew older she started putting some of those ideas into practice, sometimes coming out on top, at other times injured and forced to flee, one time she even wound up devoured, but managed to escape thanks to her resilience to the digestive juices and her continued struggling to force herself out, which she eventually managed, not only that, devouring the tired harpy afterwards was child’s play. Occasionally she came across humans, avoiding those moving in groups and preying on those that seemed isolated. She learned a painful lesson early on that devouring ‘people’ often comes with consequences, unlike with other monster girls, people came looking for those gone missing, with steel and magic. This has happened a few times now and while she has avoided fighting these groups of adventurers for the most part, preferring to hide and wait them out or move to a different territory altogether, there were times when she barely escaped with her life.

After this the lamia decided to look a bit deeper into these people, intelligent like herself and other, similar monster types, the next one she captures, a elf she didn’t devour immediately, instead trying to communicate, but the elf didn’t understand what she expected from him and seemed too afraid to be of help. The next one, a human child was a little more helpful, and the lamia kept her around to gain a rudimentary grasp of language. Naturally it wasn’t long before people came looking for the child and she was quickly devoured with Kishori going into hiding for a while. The next person she grabbed understood what she wanted much faster and it was easier to get them to cooperate, they still wound up devoured when trying to escape. Which annoyed her a fair deal since she was starting to make progress. Either way, she has since moved territories once again and is working on claiming the area while thinking about her next move in getting to learn more about these civilization stuff.

Never/Dislike One of my favorites with the territorial snek. Cannibalizing other lamia is doubly fun.
