Marisa Kirisame is a human magician. Her personality is sometimes described as disagreeable, but in some other titles, straightforward. Either way, she is a very self-confident person that likes to stick her nose into every trouble out of curiosity.
During the events of Story of Eastern Wonderland, she made her first appearance as a minion of Mima, to prevent Reimu from reaching her boss, but was defeated. Since then, she has appeared in all but one title of the Touhou series (and some non-Touhou titles too), usually sided with Reimu, but sometimes against her.
She is also known as a hard worker, who's trying to catch up to Reimu with her secret training and magic development. That makes a good contrast to other humans appearing in the series, most of them have some kind of natural born talent (Reimu) or ability (Sakuya). So she is sometimes referred as the "most human-ish human" in the series.
Marisa is the author of The Grimoire of Marisa, a collection of notes about spellcards used by her and other danmaku users she has encountered.
Fun facts about Marisa, ze!
* As Reimu is often referred to as red-white or "the red-white", fans frequently call Marisa black-white or white-black in parallel.
* Marisa is one of the most frequent characters to appear in the Touhou series, tied with Reimu after the release of Fairy Wars.
* Marisa has 6 theme songs (excluding remixes), more than any other character in the series.
* She is known for "copying" attacks from enemies she has fought, namely Non-Directional Laser from Patchouli and Master Spark from Yuuka Kazami. Additionally, the green projectiles that she fires as a playable character seem to have been lifted from Reimu and the overall astronomy theme to her magic seems to have been learned from Mima Moreover, she used Alice's Artful Sacrifice as reference for her Shoot the Moon spellcard.
* Marisa has a hobby of collecting things, whether they already belong to someone or not. It is stated that she never throws away anything she collects, which results in her house being the messiest in Gensokyo. However, she seems to collect items without knowing their true value; Rinnosuke once finds an ancient sword, namely the famous Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi in a pile of scrap metal she owns.
* Despite being a western style magician and fitting the classic image of a witch, Marisa's most precious item is an eastern style Hakkero: a mini furnace in the shape of an octagonal block with the eight trigrams printed in a circle on its front. Despite its small size (it fits easily in the hand), it is a potent source of magical energy and has the firepower to burn down a mountain. Marisa usually uses it like a normal furnace and treats it with good care. It is the only treasure Marisa collected that is used and taken care of on a regular basis. Marisa is frequently depicted using the Hakkero to power her Master Spark.
Spell cards
"As written in my book, the Grimoire of Marisa!"
魔符「ミルキーウェイ」
Magic Sign "Milky Way"
Notes: It's not that tiring
Usage: ★★★★★
A spell card that solely depends on those star pieces floating about. It seems to get hated by everyone, but as a matter of fact, there's the problem that its strength is affected by the concentration of star particles.
It can't become a finisher.
黒魔「イベントホライズン」
Black Magic "Event Horizon"
Notes: Tiring, slave type
Usage: ★★★
My slave type. I seem to be only capable of using slaves that just go around me in circles. This spell card represents the difficulty that this limited motion can make.
I've got a long way to go.
恋符「マスタースパーク」
Love Sign "Master Spark"
Notes: Fun
Usage: ★★★★★★★
My lesson of how to "Spark"
1. Concentrate your mind
2. Whisper to Mini-Hakkero tenderly
3. Aim at someone you don't like
4. Now unleash your annihilation of love!
A super fire power shot that penetrates the opponent. This feels good so I use it most often. However, feeling good leaves you open, so there's the problem of making this danmaku difficult. For your information, I'm using the mini-Hakkero to create the laser, but I'm researching how to modify it for a scatter Master Spark.
Even if the strength goes down, scattered is more powerful. Because that's what danmaku is.
光撃「シュート・ザ・ムーン」
Light Blast "Shoot the Moon"
Notes: So-so
Usage: ★★
A spell card in which danmaku are thrown towards the ground to emit linear light towards the sky at impact. I crammed light magic into my light bullets, using Alice's exploding dolls as a reference.
I'm not cruel, so I don't shape them into humans though.
儀符「オールレリーズサン」
Ritual Sign "Orreries Sun"
Notes: Miss Mima taught me this
Usage: ★★★★★
Magically installed bits fire to strengthen your assault. The bits themselves don't actually fire, but fired shots into them cause them to amplify heavily. I bet if i could learn other elements, it would change their composition firing into the bits as well. Gotta ask patchy for help.
Maybe she'll even let me borrow another move?
「ブレイジングスター」
"Blazing Star"
Notes: Become the wind, from myself type
Usage: ★★★★★
A spell card in which a backward Master Spark is used as acceleration to fly through the sky. It feels good to fly at extreme speeds. However, it's quite frightening to tackle at that speed... especially within forests or buildings.
I wonder if Tengu are like that too.
星符「ドラゴンメテオ」
Star Sign "Dragon Meteor"
Notes: And to the stars
Usage: ★★
A spell card in which a Master Spark is shot downwards to float. To shoot from a position of complete safety is so much fun. It's hard to hit with the laser, but that doesn't matter. Even if you lose a spell card battle, you win if you feel good. It's a game after all. A game isn't there to entertain you. You enjoy the game yourself.
Maybe when you reach the point when you can enjoy anything, you see the true glamour of the spell card for the first time.
邪恋「実りやすいマスタースパーク」
Perverse Love "Easy-Harvest Master Spark"
Notes: Perverse because you think you've dodged it
Usage:★★★★
Using a narrow beam as a conductor, you can amplify the power of a Master Spark. It's possible to attack with an immense blazing power to the front. Gotta figure out a better name for it one of these days, but it's still pretty perverse how easy it is to trick people into getting hit.
Maybe I could use tricky love....nah.
Last words
「トワイライトスパーク」
[Twilight Spark]
Notes: Still cant do this one so easy.
Usage:
"....a spark of magic...
A drop of power...
A single tear...
A simple flower...
Show your true colors, spark of light...
bring forth the master into twilight!"
Not my spell at all, Mom...er Miss Mima made this one.I've only ever seen Miss mima do it once, it's like a massive master spark that rapidly changes from a bright white color, to an insane mix of gold and black when overcharged, but it also taints the land where it strikes.
I want to learn how to use it more...but I dont want to taint the land using it.
