Born and raised in the pitch darkness underneath Ravnica by her mother Zegana, in the expansive oceans covered and forgotten by the city above
Kiora Atua developed a reverence for the gigantic sea creatures which lurked below, from the mighty kraken to the heart-ensnaring and long-lived mermaids, seeing in them a force that had endured the persistent forces of time, predation and darkness, a reverence that gave her confidence from a young age.

Kiora was perhaps best known for her dreams, in which she would give freely to the giantesses of the depths anything they sought of her, including her own body as food. Many of the merfolk saw this as a sign of a deluded mind, whereas her mother saw it as a symbol of Kiora's shared beliefs, that civilization would subsume all but those who could rise above it. Shortly after her sixteenth birthday Kiora was encountered by one of the gigantic mermaids, whom from a glance the merfolk could tell desired to consume her. She freely gave herself, allowing the mermaid to swallow her, but as she slid down her throat Kiora's planeswalker spark ignited and she was thrown across the multiverse.

Kiora spent many years after that lost, coming to terms with her powers and learning how to properly use them, during which time she did not forget her love of the creatures of the depths, which over time came to expand to the great creatures of the land. Upon her return to Ravnica, Kiora came across a world in which the ground beneath the city had begun to give way, shining the light of day upon the infinite sea below and in which her mother had taken leadership of the defunct Simic Combine, molding it into a form that suited their mutual vision. Reuniting with Zegana, it came as no surprise that Kiora had been presumed eaten by the creatures of the sea a long time ago. She was welcomed into the Simic Combine with open arms.

Although Kiora still wanders the Multiverse from time to time, more often than not she is by her mother's side, keeping her warm during the cold nights and furthering her cause during the day. As with the grand creatures she admires, Kiora is willing to give anything to further her mother's agenda.
