Kingserpent_Nagraj

While sentience and higher thinking lends itself to the formation of societal constructs, there is no such thing as a singular, universal sovereignty that reigns above general nagakind. Thusly, the "Kingserpent" title held by Nagraj has no political bearing. He is not the Kingserpent because he was born of a royal bloodline, or installed as a ruler of any particular kingdom of naga.

He is the Kingserpent because he is very, very powerful.

In his lifetime, Nagraj started as just that, a very powerful naga of no other significance. Solitary by nature, he held little regard even for the loose naga communities that had formed in the vicinity of his territory, and even they weren't excluded from his hunger, though the occasion was rare. And when human settlements began springing up nearby, it was simply a food source being in convenient range, as far as he was concerned. As naga are intelligent creatures, they tend to move out of the way when civilizations that pose a threat to their existence move up to their doorstep, and some more domestic, docile communities can even manage a level of coexistence. But Nagraj did not move. He lived as he did, and while Nagraj himself was unchanged, in the eyes of society he turned from a simple creature to a boogeyman, a danger, a risk, and finally, a monster. And this is where being very, very powerful began to play a role. Peasant rabble with torches and pitchforks, hunters, task forces composed of trained men at arms, none were able to displace the Kingserpent, forays that were far better remembered than the attempts at diplomacy. He was a constant thorn, and a looming threat that would not go away, and while it was easy to see the creature as but a simple, mindless beast, Nagraj was anything but. It wasn't that he never comprehended his position, or the possibilities. But on his pride and principle, it was only right that he had claim to what was his, and owned what he hunted, and if the humans were able to drive him away then he would accept that as well. But the awkward circumstance was ultimately that he was but one naga, and yet he was too powerful for anything feasible to best, and for decades he would come to be undaunted by encroaching civilization. It is said that one day, a famed swordmaiden had crossed the territory on one of her many adventures. Hearing the plight of the villagers, she immediately made her way to the lair of the Kingserpent, and neither were heard from ever again...

But it was from there on when he truly became the "Kingserpent", for as formidable as Nagraj was in the flesh, he was but a naga. As time passed, Nagraj became a legend. Depending on who it was relaying his tale: He could be the terrible monster, threatening the peace of the Kingdom; The demonic tyrant that had intended on conquering the World; The wise and magnificent ruler of a naga kingdom or empire; A protector of nagakind... some stories even imply that he and the swordmaiden hadn't fought, but rather vanished as lovers. While many of these accounts are provably false, he had a definite impact on how human Kingdoms viewed the World outside of civilization, while there was no change in the relationship at large, humans had became especially wary about taking the territories of nagas for a trifling matter. But most notably, centuries beyond the lifespan any naga of his time may have had, there are those who have come to regard him as a being of worship.

And so, the life of the Kingserpent would find it's continuation, as warlocks and sorcerors seek to summon a powerful being, or when shamans and druids need a protector, or when a small, naturalistic gathering seek to summon a symbol of fertility, the deified Kingserpent is called to return from ages long past to truly rule...
