A faint distortion hangs in the air, like heat rising off of baked, desert sands. It obscures the broken, shattered bones of what was once a vibrant metropolis. Buildings broken, cars ruined and roads fractured. And in the center of what was once a bustling city filled with life and stories, hangs a hole. Like a brooding, inky black moon, hanging low in the sky. And, through it, monsters pour into the world..
It's hard to quarantine an entire city, and make sure nothing gets out. But, the Vanguard has set up a cordon, military and paramilitary forces, supplemented with volunteers made up mostly of survivors from the event that shattered the city. Checkpoints, bases and watch towers ring the forests and hills that surround Veldenberg, doing their best to make sure nothing calamitous gets past to defenseless civilian populace. But, it's not quite as simple as 'contain'. That breach lets strange, dangerous things through, and leaving them to infest and grow stronger in the ruins of a city is not a wise choice.
Karel is one of these volunteers, and is part of the Wardens, a force dedicated to patrolling the ruins of Veldenburg proper, and dealing with the most dangerous of the creatures and dangers that trickle regularly from what is known, rather unpoetically, as 'the Hole'.

Karel himself is something of an imposing sight. Over seven feet tall, dense with well-maintained muscle, with jet black skin over most of his body. A snout full of fangs, with two dagger-like canines that jut from the front of his snout. Other notable features are the bone white horns that jut from the top of his skull, his long, muscular tail, and the powerful digitigrade legs that leave him looking 'bestial', by other's description.
