That's the thing, though, isn't it? She USED to be able to do that. It was a neat trick she learned when she was a child, and provided hours and hours of entertainment, making magic just dance before her, lights flashing and popping in all sorts of colors. And then... well, it got ruined for her, either by her own mind or by someone else's comments. And now... well, now magic blows up in her face, quite literally.
Really! It does! There's a bright flash, a bang, and then her face is covered in soot, and her hair is blown back. She has NO idea why it has this effect, but it consistently does. Where the soot from, why her hair sticks out the way it does, she has NO idea, but really, it's just depressing. It's gotten to the point where she doesn't try magic very often anymore, as a result. No, she's content to just... well, try to be normal. Ish.
Mind, being normal in Gensokyo isn't exactly easy, now is it? Everyone there is special somehow, and there's a LOT of superpowers out there. It's like comic books meets Japanese folklore, really, only with more women. LOTS more women.
Speaking of superpowers... Akemi isn't one. She's just a girl who was orphaned in one of Gensokyo's many incidents, and has done her best to move on since then. She's got a nice little job running a tea house, where she makes sweets and pastries and the like, and does her best not to upset anyone. She accepts customers of pretty much all races, without question or complaint(so long as they can pay, and sometimes even if they can't), and tends to hear a lot of gossip. Still, she doesn't poke fun, or pry, or cause any incidents herself, so most people leave her alone. It's actually gotten to be... well, a bit boring.
Which may explain why people have heard explosions near her home, lately, come to think of it.
