Gatenmaru's mother, Garamaru, waited far too long to finally begin workind towards producing heirs to take her place as the head of their clan. After centuries of putting it off, with her ebbing fertility becoming more and more apparent, the clan's elders finally gave Gatenmaru an ultimatum: produce heirs, or step down and have the NEXT family in line take control of the clan. This, of course, was the motivation she needed. After painstakingly working to find herself the right husband with whom to mate, she was relentless in her attempts to conceive. After years of trying, she finally produced one small batch of eggs. Of her thirteen children, only one ended up being female. That child would be named Gatenmaru, which meant holy moth.

Unfortunately for the moth yokai, the only female that could be a clan-head was marked with the Antagonist gene. It was evident early on in her life: feeding her was exceptionally difficult. While most of the larvae were able to eat normally, Gatenmaru wailed and wept as though she were starving, no matter what they fed her. It was only with their distress did she calm.

It was a disaster for the entire clan. How could they be taken seriously with their grand Matriarch being an Antagonist? For as long as possible, Garamaru tried to quash any rumours about her daughter's... Condition, but it was impossible to keep it a secret for very long; the curse is so evident. Gatenmaru grew up with an entourage of body guards, as spreading news about their up- and-coming matriarch being of such a disposition was deplorable and many of the clanspeople weren't willing to accept her.

Despite what any of her clan wanted, Gatenmaru was to be the next Matriarch. She accepted and acknowledged from an early age that she would more than likely never be loved or even liked by her people, so she knew that if she wanted to secure her position that she would need to be fierce. She trained and grew stronger every day, even surpassing her mother's strength just after her metamorphasis into a grown moth. She took her spot after her mother's death and ruled with an iron fist. Her metaphorical ship was kept tight and any who dared to cross her would be punished.

With her guidance and leadership, they prospered, gaining territory and sway in the yokai world. They allied themselves with the sheep, and landed in good graces with the hamsters. Despite worry, it seemed nobody outside of the clan knew of the leader's vices. Thankfully, nobody inside the clan really WANTED others to find out. Gatenmaru's secret was safe and the clan was doing well, there was nothing more for which any of them could ask.
