A World in Turmoil!
Following the assassination of the Imperial Duke, the political world was thrown into a downward spiral with military escalations! The Imperial Empire declaring war on Sebenia soon follows after a month of crisis and ultimatums.
Mighty empires roped by their allegiances into the fight has sparked a conflict of worldly proportion. The reactions are mixed among the human populace with those thinking that this will be but a easy feat and finally to show their might; others doubt and fear.
Yet as the mighty empires prepare their armies for all out war, their stands out a perculiar new formation of soldiers. Soldiers whom are women and not only that but seemingly half bird with their wings and feathered tails!
The Winged Fusiliers prepare themselves for becoming apart of a war that is not their own; but the humans they coexist with have called upon them to serve, and finding any better work for a bird seems hard and all the work seemingly has dried up.
Now as the global conflict starts in earnest, they can only hope that it will end quickly and they can return home as heroes to their countries. Though their survival now is placed in jeoparady as the war continues on and the optimism disappears; leaving them to hold their wits to see home again..
The Winged Maidens
As the world around them plunges into war, the ladies of the skies find themselves surrounded in a whirlwind of human politics and aggression. These bird ladies, referred to often as angels, harpies, demis, or just birds, have coexisted by the humans for sometime. There are written scriptures from ancient times describing of 'angels' and 'winged maidens' that shied away from the humans for many centuries; their societies kept a mystery and unknown by most humans. Most. Some humans would decide to explore and dedicate their lives to researching these winged maidens, their desire to learn and make contact with these maidens. However as the saying 'Easier said than done' goes, these humans would surely have their work cut out for them as the bird maidens hid well. They were also seeming to be a step ahead and were quick to migrate away from wherever there might've been humans. These researchers devising that these maidens were likely scared of humans more than they were scared of them; they didn't understand one another but the maidens did not want to interact with them to understand. They preferred to keep away to themselves; considered the natives to those mystery lands. Though the only ones that are strangers are the non-winged beings coming to try and find them out there in their lands. But as the years went on, the bird maidens would surely grow more and more accustomed to seeing the humans; relations between them certainly were gaining traction finally and communications were being made between the two kinds.
Human and Bird relations were a bit lukewarm at bet from the start and continue to be. Birds being rather tentative and wary for the longest time before there began being some living together with humans in towns and cities after a while. They felt, and were noticing, that the humans after a time were treating them a little bit like secondary. The humans surely saw them as versatile for roles like messengers or transporting mail, farming, and other jobs yet despite such helpfulness they weren't seen too eye to eye by some for their species. It surely kept a little bit of a wedge between the humans and birds emotionally; though atleast they were still considered just as much a citizen of whatever country they were in which entitle to something good. However there were plenty whom preferred to stay 'Native' as they were titled by the humans. Those feathery maidens that preferred to just remain true to their roots and stay in their woodland and mountainous homes and live off the land where they can be at peace. But they can thank the humans for having helped in modernize and help in civilize them a little more like proper clothing, homes and machines, and other new nifty never before seen things! They came to coexist apart of the humans even if they surely had a little bit of a tough time at times living together with them and it only would get harder now with the start of the war..
The Winged Fusiliers
With war declared and the conflict arising, the maidens of the skies were called upon by their nations to the call of duty. Though it is surely not like they had much options if they didn't desire such..
The winged fighters; the Battle Angels, His Majesty's Winged Fusiliers, the Empire's Valkyries, there are many names that they go by but the Winged Fusiliers are a staple of the conflict. Like the humans, maidens of the sky were called upon to fill in the ranks in the grand armies as the special fusiliers that they could become. The army wanted the winged maidens to create special regiments that would see action in the skies and acting like air to air combatants as well as threats to enemies on the grounds below. Their training was centered around them particularly; the basic training being similar to the humans own but soon delved into more skyward tactics. Combat training in the skies, team tactics while in flying formations, bird eye's view of mapping and landscape recognition, and many more other additional training that the human ground forces do not see. Rightfully, the Winged Fusiliers took a bit of time to see field action compared to the soldiers whom had already been sent to the hell on earth that was the war on the frontlines. They heard stories about the horrid conditions and destruction that was happening; the bloodshed and violent storm of fire and steel that had turned countrysides and landscapes that were once beautiful into blasted ruins. The land scarred and made rather apocalyptic; though surely the skies would be much more safer than the hell that was the land surely?..
Winged Fusiliers compared to the ground forces have a much less gear to carry such as to make sure that they aren't too weighed down to take flight. Their carry mostly minimal gear which is more focused on ammo pouches, holsters for side arms, bags for carrying grenades if they are given such, sheathed knives and bayonets for rifles, parachutes, small first aid kits, gas masks, canteens --for waters or sometimes liquor--, and any other small gear that they can carry but not be weighed down much. It's certainly imperative that they avoid being overloaded and the less items, the less drag on them when in the air. Their uniforms are specially tailored and made for their different body types and the wings that they possess so that they can work well even with the uniform. The uniforms being an insulated flight suit allowing to withstand the cold frigid air at higher altitudes and as well as the rainy environment of the battlefields. Smaller coats worn within to ensure the best protection against the elements. Parachutes and emergency parachutes are secured to their fronts and backs respectively for their safety; there surely is hope they wouldn't need to use it but they were there for assurance. Flight goggles adorn their heads as standard with their uniforms for the protection of their eyes from the winds and when in flight; sometimes interchanged with those gas-masks. Winged Fusiliers may at times be carrying some rations within their first aid pouches.
Winged Fusilier regiments are sent alongside ground forces to provide air support in anyway that they can. The Fusiliers often focusing on taking down enemy aircraft and deterring any other enemy fusiliers from causing trouble for their human counterparts. They attack in squadrons lead usually by Sergeants; each squad consisting of around 5 to 6 birds and the sergeants more experienced leading the offensive or defensive flock. Squadrons often go out in pairs or in trios to cover as much air and be able to provide support to one another if they run into trouble but avoid bunching up. That will only make them easy picking for any anti-air and flak coming from enemy trenches. Fusiliers assist in escort missions with allied aircraft during the day time for bombing runs, engaging the enemy, and defending their airships from attacks as well. They also provide escort for night bombing runs on enemy trenches and night time raids. Smaller bird species provide roles as messengers and scouts for the Fusiliers and report back to their higher ups which often are under supervision of human commanders as per usual. Some birds work as nurses as well though rather segregated means they mostly or exclusively are only treating their fellow birds in the medical tents and hospitals away from the frontlines. Winged Fusiliers certainly show patriotic feeling towards fighting for their country but they aren't quite as grounded into their desire for a continued conflict when it isn't even theirs to begin with. Sometimes they can be questioning the good of this war on their kind. They feel that it endangers their already smaller size compared to the human race; risking all their lives surely for fighting a war that they've been dragged into..
The Mothership
The winged soldiers mother ship. Originally a private passenger airship.
Interesting fact, apparently the dirigibles from this universe have been given armor cladding to make them resistant to attack. Additionally, some of them have also been turned into flying gun batteries with multiple cannons.
Artillery placed on gondolas that are not rigidly attached to the airships. Being pendulum themelves, gondolas naturally converges to be directly below ship. After firing a barrage, initial recoil impulse is dampened by rocking gondola. The dirigible (especially if armored) has enough inertia and air resistance to keep stable position. With some "counterweight" tethers (either elastic or actually sophisticated counterweight system inside the balloon), gun gondolas can stabilize itself.
