The Four Kings were once great leaders of New Londo, and, in recognition of their foresight, Gwyn granted them their ranks and apportioned fragments of a Lord Soul discovered from the First Flame.
When the Four Kings were seduced by evil, their knights became Darkwraiths, users of the art of Lifedrain. In an effort to contain the threat they posed, New Londo was flooded, trapping the Four Kings and the Darkwraiths in the Abyss, and sacrificing the city of New Londo and the countless lives therein.
But the story does not ened there. COntrary to the belief that the kings were male, these were female but hermaphrodites with the title of kings that ruled from behind the kings that are seen in the abyss. These are the true faces of the Four Kings who rule over the Abyss and the Darkwraiths.
If one wishes to do so, one might also acquire the art of Lifedrain from them and seeking an audience from them is never quite easy as one has to traverse a realm where only darkness looms in every direction with nothing but utter blackness spread out that goes on forever.
They have voracious appetites and each a personality of their own. If you win their favor, expect great rewards but incite their anger and expect to wind up inside of them for all time.
