Work in progress. Will be one for a long time, as well. People copying my idea have slightly reduced my enthusiasm.

Ages ago... centuries, maybe even millenia... a civilization thrived. This civilization was virtuous and prosperous, and the gods rewarded them for their diligence, gifting them with items and artifacts that allowed them to ascend closer to their gods than any mortal race before them.

One might assume that such power would add to their prosperity. But, they were human. And humans are flawed.

The power they were given by their gods changed them. Corrupted them. Turned them against their own creators, even. A war resulted. The gods prevailed, but at massive cost...

It was decided that these artifacts would remain as a memoir of the damage done by overeager mortals looking for shortcuts. But they could not simply be placed into temples or museums. They would be stolen in short order. So, the gods had a plan.

To solve this, colossal guardians were created. Each guardian had a host of powerful artifacts placed within them, inside of a labyrinthine maze of traps.

Time passed. The gods faded from memory. So did the guardians. One by one, these massive creatures fell into a deep sleep, their treasures resting within their bodies, never to be touched by unworthy hands.

However, the world is tumultuous once again. Enough conflict exists to stir those ancient gods into observing once more... and with them, the guardians awaken, prepared to defend their relics and treasures once more.

Time has not been kind, however. The labyrinths inside of them have deteriorated into ruin. Unwittingly, their centuries of immobility and inaction have made the treasures they guard that much safer.

It is said that warriors flock to the guardians now that they are awake, hoping to retrieve these powerful artifacts for themselves, to once again gain the upper hand in the eternal cycle of war humanity chooses to torture itself with. The guardians allow these attempts, of course... only a truly worthy soul can leave their brutal innards with their prize. Anyone else is doomed to wander inside of them forever, or worse... to be trapped, crushed, or even digested away, forgotten.

Just as the guardians themselves once were.

These guardians were not created equal. Each of them was lovingly crafted by the gods, shaped into a favored form and cast upon the earth. All are massive, however... their very movements cause the ground to quake. All are wise, as well... with thousands of years of sage advice to offer. They are dangerous when angered, and cordial when approached with care. It is very rare to find them all in one place... or, indeed, find any of them gathered together at all. They prefer different locales, and only come together once every ninety days or so.

Nor are they the same on the inside. Every guardian has a different labyrinth of danger guarding the relics within. Some might require a strong warrior, others a stealthy rogue. Some might require intelligence to pass, others little more than a steady hand. But all are equally dangerous, in the end.

THE FORGOTTEN GUARDIANS

Era, Guardian of the Mountains

Era is a gentle giantess, a creature of solitude who prefers the altitude and forests common to tall mountain ranges. It is here that she settles, watching the world. She rarely speaks, and when she does it is with a voice far softer than one might expect. Yet despite her gentle personality, Era's ruins are a test of a warrior's strength, with many dangers both animate and not lurking amongst the rubble...

Epoch, Guardian of the Sands

Epoch is a cheerful, jovial girl, always happy to observe any sign of life she can spy, due to her preferred climate. Able to move through sand like a fish might move through water, Epoch lives in a vast desert, and therefore any visitors she gets are welcome, whether they plan to raid her stomach or not. Her ruins require dexterity and agility to navigate, lest one fall into a pit of acidic quicksand... the pit of her belly is particularly unkind, as like normal quicksand, the struggling simply makes you sink faster...

Century, Guardian of the Waters

Century is far too playful and teasing for a proper guardian... or at least, that's what her sisters would say. Lurking in the oceans and seas of the world, Century is likely the most mobile of the guardians, which gives her a lot of exposure to humanity... and has made her a bit of a flirt. Don't let her fool you, however. Her labyrinth is a hazard in itself, every surface slick with water, waiting for a careless misstep...
