Eva Marie is reluctant to reveal information about herself and is extremely secretive. She lets her peers refer to her as "E.M.O." rather than her real name, and constantly deflects curious prodding about her personal life and past. To most people, Emo's unusually secretive nature is fascinating. She has the best game face of anyone you'd ever meet.
Emo can be sarcastic and cynical at times. Although she believes in the importance of hope, Emo believes that people are intrinsically happy or miserable, and that this cannot be changed. She believes this so she does not need to resent the fact that her life is full of misfortune rather than fortune.
Emo has a 50/50 chance of having inherited Huntington's disease from her mother, but refuses to be tested for it as not knowing allows her to live with hope. After being diagnosed, she exhibits sensation seeking: staying out all night, using recreational drugs and having repeated one-night stands with women. After a near-death experience, she realizes her conviction to live, agreeing to participate in a Huntington's disease drug trial and becoming more active in her attempts to prolong her life.
Her behavior brings her peers to consider her someone who avoids or ignores her own personal problems and pretends that nothing is wrong. She is also shown to hide deep-seated fear.
Emo's contempt at the idea of being categorised or oversimplified leads her peers to assume that she is bisexual. She does not act surprised and does not respond to comments about her sexuality. She becomes more open and blatant about her sexuality around women to whom she is attracted.
Emo works as a waitress and a librarian. She keeps a low profile, but does maintain a local social life at parties. She rarely if ever approaches people, but sometimes she just can't stop herself.
