Espie used to be an ordinary Espurr living on Route 6. However, when a poorly parented trainer of psychic Pokemon captured Espie and decided to torture her, she was permanently changed from the experience.
The torment went like this: the trainer sent out Espie and five Mr. Mimes, who surrounded Espie from all sides and used Reflect, forming a continuous bubble of reflection that trapped the Espurr. The trainer then entered the bubble and pulled up Espie's ears. The powerful psychic shock waves from within ricocheted off of the reflection bubble and rebounded upon Espie, crushing her.
Naturally, the trainer was not spared for her foolish iniquity. Due to Espie's lack of control over the psychic power, it attacked the trainer as well, merging the trainer and Espie on a metaphysical level, into a single entity, with the mind of Espie and the body (for the most part) of the trainer.
There were two noteworthy effects from this transformation:
That last one didn't actually happen, she just likes to joke about it. Her psychic power is still in her head. Even spooky Espurrs have a sense of humor! She's somewhat aware that the joke could be taken sexually, which makes her all the more inclined to make it.
