Alraune Physiology

Alraune are typically seen as human women from the hips up, sharing much of the same anatomy as well. Anything below appears to be the woman standing within a giant flower of some species, typically with vines or tendrils surrounding said flower or the human half above. The flower itself can vary, much like normal, smaller flowers, and it's not unusual to find the alraune's associated flower around the place in which she is rooted in large quantities. If anything, her associated flower absolutely thrives nearby, bringing certain alraunes a lot of attention come Valentine's Day. To keep the entire plant from being displaced easily, like other large plants, alraunes have large, expansive root systems. For alraunes, their roots are different from their vines and/or tendrils, and serve a triple-purpose. While one can easily guess the first two, the third is something unseen in other plants, and that is to protect the one "organ" alraunes have that normal human women don't.

Underneath each alraune is a sac typically filled with nutrient-rich fluid that she stores for when food of any kind is hard to come by, which is filled by her natural plant functions as well as consumption of live meals. While it's possible for her to lead her meals down here through her human half, a far more direct method is for her to utilize mouth-like tendrils, whose primary purpose seems to be to deposit and retrieve live prey from the sac. Despite the sac being a technical part of the alraune's intestinal tract, the digestive properties of the nutrient fluid are typically scant at best, with prey actually able to heal faster than the fluids can digest. The fluids themselves are sweet in flavor, similar to a fruit medley, and can be used to sustain humans who are lucky enough to find themselves within an alraune's sac. Some say the fluids have curative capabilities, healing sicknesses and keeping down the common cold being a few examples of its healing properties when ingested. Combined with the constant supply of air, people have spent days at a time in the fluid sac of alraunes with no known ill effects to her, though a survey of their kind says that they much prefer female company.

Speaking of, alraunes in this setting have a very unique method of reproduction. At the start of an alraune's life, the human half tends to have unnatural skin and hair color, as well as having plant matter as part of their human half. As time passes, the visible plant matter recedes and vanishes, and the human half's skin and hair starts to take a more natural tone, depending on the region in which the alraune is being raised. Meaning yes, it's possible to have black alraunes. The period of time over which this takes place is normally within 18 to 20 years, though the human half shows a woman about fifteen years of age upon birth, maturing slowly as she appears more human. The plant half itself takes about as much time to mature enough to produce a human half. The best way to know when the human half of an alraune is ripe is to take a look at where she appears to merge with her plant half. Once you start seeing her thighs, it's time for the human half to go, for she has developed full legs and her digestional tract has separated from the underground sac. "Picking" an alraune can be done by hand by pulling her out of the plant half. After the halves have been separated for a half hour, the plant half closes its flower and begins the two-year process of developing another human half, the previous one now free to live her life as a normal woman. A healthy alraune plant can typically produce up to four women in its full lifespan, sometimes five. The current record stands at seven sisters, all of which are alive and well as of this writing.

Upon expiration, an alraune plant shuts down its processes, withering away over two months as its roots recede and the sac dries up. The process can be sped up by draining the sac after the alraune's final picking, and the dried-up sac ends up looking like a walnut the size of a soccer ball. This is an alraune seed, which can be used to plant another alraune and start the cycle all over again, though seeds have been known to split in half to produce two alraunes at different spots. Though, it's very possible to cultivate a "bonsai" alraune--which is to say a micro alraune--by planting the seed in a large pot as opposed to open ground.
