There's not a whole lot that isn't dangerous in the ocean. Sharks, jellyfish, the really weird pirahna in that one stupid horror movie, pirates... long story short, most people don't find the ocean too appealing anymore.
Emma isn't one of them.
Born in a little coastal town called Innsmouth in Massachusetts, Emma Morneau was always fascinated by the water. She was quick to learn how to swim, and was the pioneer of a lot of her school's events, hosting them at the beach nearby, and even saving up allowances for close to three years to buy herself a small sailboat! When she graduated, Emma was a fairly popular girl, and she went off to vocational school to study shipbuilding. It wasn't going to make her much money, no, but she wanted to live out her dream of sailing across the oceans.
After finishing vocational school quickly, Emma built herself a decent sized houseboat, and sailed up and down the eastern coast of the US, visiting family, seeing sights, what have you. Well, one day, her luck started to run out. About ten miles out from the coast of Virginia, she ran out of fuel on the outboard motor, and there wasn't a breeze to be had to catch in her sail. It was starting to get darker, as well, storm clouds brewing nearby. Praying for salvation, Emma fell to the deck of her ship and bowed her head, ready to go down with her home.
Fate had other ideas, however, and as a heavy wave knocked Emma overboard, she was caught by a pair of strong arms, tugged deeper into the cold water, where she had started to pass out. When she came to, she was on the deck of her ship, docked at home in Massachusetts, and perfectly fine. Thinking nothing of it, the young sailor fueled up and set out for the coastlines once more!
About six months later, Emma had completely forgotten about her fiasco off the coast, and returned home for one last party before she started to sail the world. Going for a dip in the ocean with her high school friends, she started to swim out, showing off her powerful technique. Before she knew it, she had been pulled out a good mile from the shore, and the tides were pulling her under! Treading water for her life, she tried to stay afloat, but she ended up sinking, swallowing down a bucket's worth of salty seawater in the meantime.
When she came to, she was out in the ocean, and the riptide had subsided, so Emma made her way back to the shore, where her friends were staring at her in abject horror. Soon, she realized why..she had changed into a freak! Gathering her things quickly, she set sail immediately, without a goodbye or anything.
Emma Morneau, as she is now, is a healthy twenty-five years old, with fiery red hair and eyes now dark as onyx, pupilless, and usually covered with a filmy 'eyelid' in addition to her normal mammalian eyelids. Her skin is a faint grey, with her extremities and more sensitive skin a salmon-pink. Speaking of her skin, it's normally not that damp, but it is almost rubbery in texture, and can sometimes be hydrated. Her hands are normally not as webbed and animalistic as in this picture - this was taken right after a swim. When in contact with a large body of water, her body adapts, growing the extra webbing on her hands and feet to swim faster. Her ears are now finned ridges, poking out from the mop of red hair, still cared for rather routinely.
Normally, she can be seen wearing loose fitting clothing, not showing off much of her body, as full-figured as it may be. She's not exactly fat, but there are some people from before her 'transformation' that might have said 'dayum' when in her presence. Often, she will be seen wearing light greens and blues in shirts, and a pair of loose jeans or slacks.
