Elysium

Well, how much you enjoy your stay depends on why you're here, honestly. Still, it is a nice sentiment, don't you think?

Regardless, welcome to Elysium! Relax, kick back, and take it easy. More than likely, you need to, considering the main purpose of this station.

Originally, Elysium wasn't sentient. Indeed, at first it was tiny! Well, relatively speaking. it started off as a research outpost in the middle of nowhere, with a staff of thirty scientists. They were studying artificial intelligence, among other things, and the possibility of transferring a human mind to a synthetic container, or a synthetic mind to an organic container. Eventually, the goal was to transfer one's mind from a worn-out body to a brand new one, assuming such were possible.

As you might imagine, eventually the research had to end. In this case, due to a war with another species, one that attacked out of nowhere. The station was called upon in the middle of an artificial intelligence test, sent to give medical aid to a warship's crew. They'd been ambushed, and many were badly injured, maimed, or killed. For the last, there wasn't any hope, no treatment options. They were dead, gone, kaput. That's all folks. The scientists were going to just bury them, when the artificial intelligence managed to take control of the station. It brought them in, and it managed to download a goodly portion of their memories, bringing itself a greater degree of sapience and compassion. Then it rendered the corpses for materials, and began ordering the scientists about. Most refused to help, but the few who did were astounded by the results.

The station, identifying itself now as Elysium, jury-rigged tanks filled with a dark, purplish fluid. When the wounded were placed into the tanks, their flesh began to mend rapidly. The station had managed to find a way to induce rapid regeneration, even of lost limbs. The fluids were in fact full of nanomachines it had constructed during the other sessions, with a small fabricator. One here, another there... building more and more, but always under Elysium's control. Now they proved their worth, saving hundreds of lives.

Needless to say, this event got the station noticed. There was a lot of fear, a lot of worry, and a lot of hope. People were afraid that the station might turn on them, reduce them to materials it needed and essentially consume them. But the government decided to risk a few things. They sent someone to negotiate with the station, which was by now a fully sentient one, with its own artificial intelligence. They asked it for its help, and it agreed... after all, it didn't know there was anything else to do!

So they upgraded it. Expanded it, and armored it, sending it in to rescue crews of attacked vessels, stranded survey teams... pretty much anything. And as it did this, it was rewarded in its own way. And slowly, over time, it grew larger, and larger, and more and more capable.

The war is, of course, long over. Elysium saw to that, though she prefers not to talk about it. And now, Elysium is a free state in her own right, a private station that offers aid to any and all. A small number of people live aboard the station now, and it has a complement of support mechs, also with their own artificial intelligences... her daughters, if you will.

By the by... that image at the top is Elysium's avatar. The station itself is very, very much larger than either of Elysium's constructed selves, which are five and ten feet tall, and quite lifelike. Elysium occupies several cubic miles of space, by this point. It has to, considering what it does.

It repairs things. People. Mechs. Anything, really. That is its primary purpose, to fix things. And it does this with ease, using the wide variety of tools at its disposal. Everything from gravity control to high-powered energy weapons are at its disposal, and its mind is fully capable of running every system aboard the station at once. Nevermind that there are plenty of people with a vested interest in maintaining the station itself. After all, anyone can come by and be healed, and have their gear repaired, for a really, really small fee. At least, compared to many of the others. Though, of course, gifts are always appreciated.

Of course, there are the other complications, the other mechs aboard Elysium. Here's a list of the types you can expect.

Recharge and Basic Repair Drone, Firefly.


Equipped with basic gravitic units on the lower legs, and a large generator for its size, the Firefly is the workhorse of the Elysium Repair Fleet. They can fit almost anywhere, and do almost anything. Recharging electrical systems that need it, welding on new armor, soldering, the works. Each one's right hand contains a number of tools, including optic probes, welders, and precision implements, in addition to a small canister of nanites that can fit where the Firefly itself cannot. There are several thousand aboard Elysium, most of them offline the majority of the time. Firefly units tend to be boisterous, cheerful, perhaps a bit arrogant, and rather touchy when it comes to the quality of their work. constructed of durable polymers, they feel almost human, and indeed are in many ways. They're not the smartest, and tend to be a bit tomboyish, by and large. Sometimes one will ask to go with a particular guest, and stay with them. This is typically allowed. As with other mechs, they have fully developed emotions, though their voices are clearly synthesized and cannot display emotions easily. They tend to be between 4 and 6 feet tall.

Medical and Human Interactions Mech, Angel.


The Angel model of Elysium mechs is an interesting one. It's primarily a medical machine, but it also does duty as a hostess, clerk, and tour guide for new visitors. Each one is far stronger than a human, and fully capable of flying and protecting itself. Its skin is bulletproof and quite resistant to directed energy weapons, and very elastic. Angels may choose to do more with guests, but at their discretion. They're typically kind, gentle, and caring, and act a bit timid. They have advanced emotional processes and voice synthesizers. They are also typically more fully dressed, and average from 5'2 to 8 feet tall.

Mech and Ship Repair and Refit Mech, Armitage.


Armitage models are the main unit when it comes to repairing their similarly-sized counterparts. Skilled, efficient, and friendly, they can interact well with their injured compatriots and fix them faster than whole teams of smaller drones or humanoids. They can literally get a salvaged mech from scrap to operational status in 2 days, and battle-ready in a few hours more. They tend to be a bit smug, and slightly conceited, but this is certainly earned. They have large resevoirs in their body cavities full of raw materials, ready for use in repairs. This and their multiple limbs, with their myriad tools, is the main reason for the model's success. They are one of the few that will readily consume smaller humanoids for reasons other than interaction or affection, as well. They have a pair of secondary body cavities, in which nanite tanks can and will stabilize wounded pilots, and render dead ones for materiel. Their voices are clearly synthesized but can convey a larger number of emotions with greater ease than a Firefly. They are most comfortable around other sentient mechs of various sorts, for rather obvious reasons, as they themselves tend to be somewhere between fifty and one hundred feet tall.

Rescue and Retrieval Mech, Valkyrie.


The least common but most important model of mech is the Valkyrie. This is the workhorse of the Elysium fleet, the one sent to recover vessels and mechs that have been attacked who managed to notify Elysium of their distress and request aid. Heavily armed and armored, with a massive power generator for their size, they are potent offensively and defensively. They have to be, to do their jobs. Depending on the situation, they can eliminate hostile ships in a variety of ways, and haul the damaged ship or mech back with relative ease. Often, if the vessel is small enough, it will be stored safely inside the Valkyrie. For anything larger than three hundred feet that cannot be compressed safely, the Valkyrie will use its gravitic tug to haul the vessel back to Elysium. They are also equipped with a mobile hospital, staffed by a pair of Angel units, with plentiful nanite tanks for injured humanoids.

Valkyries are fluent in all major galactic languages and some minor ones. They are friendly, compassionate, and helpful, though they feel awkward around humanoid beings that are so much smaller than themselves. as with the Armitage units, their voices are clearly synthesized, though emotional, and they prefer the company of other mechs. Surprisingly, their armor can actually be removed, and beneath they look rather more like humans.

The Nanite Tanks sometimes aren't enough, mind you. Sometimes more intensive work is needed. The station can interface within the tanks, some of which are quite spacious, and repair or upgrade the being within. In addition, they can be used for very extensive virtual reality simulations, or to communicate with Elysium directly.


TLDR version: Giant repair station in space, with mechs and people aboard, for setting-based RP.

This is as much a setting as a character. You can meet any number of individuals here, mechanized and otherwise, and the variety is pretty surprising. Feel free to run an idea by me!
