In all the time my Toads and I have spent studying the many interesting plants and creatures of our kingdom and the surrounding realms, none have perplexed me more than the oddity known as the Birdo. Many theories abound as to how something so peculiar could have evolved naturally, with some even suggesting that the very existence of the Birdo outright proves the existence of a god-like higher power, as no concrete evidence can be given as to the nature of such a bizarre evolutionary background. Indeed, the Birdo's rather unnerving and yet oddly enticing appearance seems to suggest that the race itself was cobbled together from the leftovers of creation, before being left to fend for itself.

Since research into such a dangerous species would be particularly deadly for me and my Toads, I took the liberty of hiring an old friend to help me in my studies on this occasion. Thanks again, Samus!

The typical appearance of the average Birdo is that of a curvy reptilian creature, standing at around 5-10' in height, with what appears to be a bow on its head. Further studies have found that this "bow" is actually a natural part of Birdo biology, and makes up an orifice similar to ears or antennae to give the creature excellent hearing and tracking abilities. Its most defining feature, of course, is its big O-shaped mouth, which is useful for swallowing large prey. Despite the odd shape of its mouth leaving it permanently open, a special set of muscles in a Birdo's throat helps with articulating its vocal chords to produce speech, even in languages that the Birdo learns other than its own. The Birdo is an apex predator, and preys upon anything it can fit in its mouth... including other Birdos--this will be elaborated on further. Prey is typically swallowed whole and alive, but the muscles of a Birdo's mouth are strong enough to compress inward and crush prey into pulp, should the Birdo desire. After the prey is swallowed and tucked away inside the Birdo's stomach, powerful digestive fluids begin to break the Birdo's latest meal down over a period of several hours. What isn't used for nutrients is broken down further inside the Birdo's intestines and stored for the disposal of waste later on.

However, the Birdo's digestive tract does have a unique feature for use both as a defensive mechanism, and as a means to incapacitate potential prey. By storing digestive fluids in a special gland in its throat, a Birdo can form a protective shell around the acids and eject them from its mouth in the form of egg-like projectiles. While the Birdo does reproduce by laying eggs after mating, these eggs are not used for reproduction. The eggs released from a Birdo's mouth will typically break open upon impact with a potential prey or attacker, releasing their acid "yolks" to cause serious injury to the opponent.

Birdo society is tribal by nature, with various Birdo villages found deep in the wilderness of the Mushroom Kingdom, as well as Sarasaland, Subcon, the BeanBean Kingdom, Mimin Island, and in other areas of the world. While there are plenty of color variations of Birdos--with pink being the most common--red and green actually denote special roles among the tribe. While Birdos can hunt on their own, red Birdos are typically tribe hunters and guards, surrounding entire groups of prey to drag back to the village for a feast, or dealing with anyone who violates the tribe's laws or customs. Red Birdos possess a special gland alongside their mouth-egg gland that enables them to coat the egg shells with acid and ignite them before launching them, creating deadly fireballs along with the standard acid-filled eggs. Green Birdos are considered the elite class, and are the rarest form of Birdo to come across. They are typically given first selection of prey at any tribal feast, even if they choose to eat another Birdo instead. Green Birdos possess only the fire egg gland instead of the normal acid egg gland, meaning they only launch fireballs when needed. This is especially fitting, as green Birdos are also known to possess a fiery temper, and a very spoiled disposition from being pampered by the rest of the tribe. It's best not to come between a green Birdo and anything--or anyone--they desire... While red and green Birdos are given special treatment over other Birdos, this does, however, depend on their gender as well as their color.

Gender differences among Birdo society are not just limited to class, but also biology. While most species possess only two biological genders--sexual preferences and identifications aside--Birdos actually come in six biological genders, divided between male and female castes. The male caste consists of normal males, cunt-boys, and male hermaphrodites, while the female caste includes normal females, shemales, and female hermaphrodites. Male, cunt-boy, and male-herm Birdos are typically the smallest Birdos in the tribe, not able to exceed 5-6' in height, and often dominated over or even preyed upon by the usually bigger and stronger Birdos of the female sexes, even if the males are of a red or green color. It's not uncommon for mother Birdos to eat their male young upon hatching, or after they've spent a few years fattening their child up. Male Birdos are often forced to survive on their own to avoid being eaten by hungry females, shemales, or herms, and sometimes a male will spend years eating as much as he can to get as chubby as possible so that his body could easily be mistaken for that of a fattened herm. Females, shemales, and hermaphrodites are the dominant Birdo genders, with the largest growing to over 10' in height. If they don't devour a male Birdo upon first sight, they will typically force him into servitude for his captor, until such time as the female, shemale, or herm decides to eat him. Under the service of a master, green male Birdos share the spoiled disposition of their female counterparts, to the extent that they see themselves as the "alpha" servant of the group, and will usually claim to be their master's "favorite", despite whether or not they have been told so. Green males--especially green male-herms--have been known to bully other males and cunt-boys into submission, and are sometimes prone to defiant outbursts towards the superior Birdos of the opposite sexes, which will usually result in a swift and often harsh punishment for the offender... It's not uncommon for the more dominant and sadistic of female Birdos to take green Birdos as slaves, just for the fun of punishing and breaking them for their inevitable rebellious outbursts. In a fem-dominated society like that of the Birdo, males have basically zero rights... ESPECIALLY pink males and outsiders. However, above all others in Birdo society, there is one in each tribe whose authority is paramount above all others.

The rarest form of Birdo is a green female hermaphrodite, which can grow to a height of over 15', towering over all others in the tribe. A green herm Birdo is worshiped as the village queen, and a female-herm, female-shemale, shemale-herm, or herm-herm couple that gives birth to one outside of the current royal bloodline is elevated to royal status, with their daughter receiving the title of "Princess" while the current queen is still in power. If a green herm survives to come of age--either in or out of the ruling bloodline--the transition of power occurs only if the princess combats and devours the current queen, thus earning her title as the new queen. All of the previous queen's servants, family, wives, and children--male, cunt-boy, male-herm, female, shemale, or herm--are then gathered in the village center for an inaugural feast and devoured.

When an outsider enters a Birdo village, they will find the attitude of the Birdos to be very friendly and hospitable, some almost flirtatious. A feast of the finest meats, fruits, vegetables, and desserts will be prepared for the visitor's arrival--whatever they would prefer. Let me warn you right now that this is just a facade, a way for the Birdos to lure you into a false sense of security. The tribe wants to fatten you up, give you all the pleasures you could ask for, all to make you complacent before one of two things happens to you--you are either offered to the village queen as a sacrificial meal, or you are given to the queen or to one of the herm or shemale Birdos as a breeder for them to fill with their eggs. For anyone or anything besides another female or herm Birdo--even for a male Birdo--being bred with a Birdo egg isn't a pleasant experience. Only the womb of a female or herm Birdo is made to stretch and withstand the massive size the egg will most likely expand to; for anyone else, being filled with a Birdo egg--or eggs, in some cases, especially with a queen--could lead to excruciatingly painful and explosive results, as your body will literally break or even burst open from the strain!

Female Birdos have an innate maternal instinct about them, so there is a chance that they will find a specimen so appealing, that they simply cannot resist adopting it as part of their "family". This is achieved by absorbing the subject into the Birdo's reproductive organ, where upon entering the Birdo's womb, they will slowly become encased within the shell of an egg and incubated while their body is transformed and reshaped into that of a new Birdo--a "daughter" for the maternal predator to raise as her own. The change is a long, slow process during a gestation period of several months, before the egg is pushed out of the mother Birdo's womb and cared for until the reborn subject hatches from it, their mind completely warped into seeing the predator that just pushed them out as their new "mama".

Not all Birdos, however, have remained bound to their tribal cultures. The most notable examples are the three servants of the toad king Wart--the Catherine "sisters"--pink, red, and green Birdos who aided in Wart's attempted invasion of the land of Subcon. Another noteworthy example is Shelly, a pink female who has since become a very close friend of Yoshi. And there is also Birdette--or "Birdie", for short--a rising starlet who tends to fall in with the wrong crowd more often than not, whether it be with the crime boss Popple or with Bowser and his Koopas.

Speaking of Wart, that brings up perhaps one of the most interesting qualities about the Birdo species--their apparent ability to manipulate the dream plane. We've seen this ability used by the Catherine "sisters" when they attempted to infiltrate the dreams of Mario, Luigi, Toad, and myself, but their failed attempts only served to alert us to Wart's plans. What I since found was that if a Birdo on the hunt wanted to use this power to its fullest, it could effectively devour a person in their dreams! Being that Birdos are largely feminine creatures by nature, they typically target the phenomenon known as "wet dreams", where a potential prey's guard would already be lowered enough for a Birdo to easily slip in and seduce them further. Being devoured by a Birdo in a dream will result in the prey vanishing from their bed without a trace, even if the Birdo isn't anywhere in the room. However, the Birdo will already have had to have seen its prey's face first--either in person or otherwise--to get a mental lock, so as long as you don't allow a Birdo to see your face, you're completely safe!

Strangely enough, Birdos actually practice competitive sport among their tribes! Occasionally, one tribe will cause dishonor to another tribe, which will cause them to challenge the offending tribe to a competition that bears a strong resemblance to soccer. The winning team gets to seal their victory by eating the losing team's players.
